Park Geun-Hye (2015) oil painting Description

“Syria’s Nuisance” (2015), part of the “Colors of solitude” exhibition from 2015, stages a disobedient presence in a political context which does not allow for unity but instead, for a theatre of war. “Staging”, a corruption of the term “representation”, as it involves much more than a personal construction and transfer of reality on a different physical realm, becomes thus a critical component of Vîrtosu’s current depiction, pushing forward an inadequate subject to a viewer that may prefer not to observe the realities surrounding him. Syria, an impoverished nation, like numerous other countries, took the headline 11 years ago under the premise of having needed to be imposed democracy over its natural way of ruling. Appearing as a no man’s land today, the territory has been slowly crumbling to pieces as the war continued over the last decade. With no intention of departure, military forces of countries such as the USA and Russia backed-up the conflicts according to their own agenda of right and wrong.

But Vîrtosu has already trained the eye of his viewer, and absorbing a narrative in absence of a broad perspective is no option. Patchworks of color that dilute as we move towards the superior margin allow for the intrusion of color despite the layer of white. The hidden is never truly coated. And the destiny of Syria may never be destroyed, as history proves. The serene blue is spread over the canvas in geometries that formulate an elastic and delicate rhythm. Although it appears to melt between sallow nuances, the rebirth of an identity raises through those harsh ash-like lines. Syria is embedded in its timeline as the canvas portrays, but a glimpse of hope leaves an impression on us due to a cobalt blue palette symbolizing peace, outer and inner.
