Abstract Painting

Hilma af Klint (1862-1944), Swedish artist considered to be the founder of Abstract art. She and four other young female artists organized the group “Five.” The mission of the group was to research spiritual aspects of culture and develop the practice of automatic drawing – the technique, which later became associated with Andre Breton and Surrealists. Klint believed herself to be a medium, claiming invisible powers translated their messages from her. She created her first abstract art compositions in 1906.

Oil Paintings

The origins of oil paintings date to the 7th century CE, when artists used walnuts oil to decorate caves. In Europe,  oil painting  is recorded as early as the 11th century. Today oil for painting consists of pigments suspended in drying oils.

Oil has been the most consistent medium in the tradition of Western painting. The clarity and precision in color were mastered in the 15th century. The shift towards canvas over wood panel occurred in the 16th century among Venetian School painters. The subsequent history of oil painting is filled with countless stylistic and technical innovations like lighting, the layering of impasto, new forms of mark-making under Impressionism and Abstract Expressionism.

The canvas is made of pure linen. This canvas is cut to the desired size and stretched over a frame, usually wooden, to which it is secured by tacks staples. A primer is applied before painting begins to reduce the absorbency and to achieve a smooth surface. A coat of varnish is usually given to a finished painting to protect it from atmospheric attacks. The varnish film can be removed safely by experts using isopropyl alcohol and other common solvents. Varnishing brings the surface to uniformity, bringing the tone depth and color intensity of wet paint.

Abstract art

Abstract art also called nonobjective art or nonrepresentational art.
