Emperor Kōtoku (2016) oil painting Description

History has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous important figures who have been lost to the pages of time. Certain individuals have managed to make a mark on our collective imagination, while others have remained only in the thoughts of those deeply affected by the person’s actions. Emperor Kotuku is one such person whose reign during the 7th century is only remembered by those deeply vested in the history of Japan. In order to commemorate the contributions of the gentle emperor, Virtosu has created this somber and moving piece. Emperor Kotuku is remembered for dismantling pre-existing establishments that favored the wealthy landowners of the era and for introducing Buddhism in the region. The kind and gentle spirit of this ruler have been captured by Virtosu in this piece using a fluid, ethereal, water-like form. While the background is sluggish and dark, much like our memories of instances too far back in time, the central entity shines brightly amidst this cosmic noise. The Emperor is depicted in a meditative pose, signifying the calm and soothing nature of his inner spirit, and also denoting the ideals of the religion he helped introduce in the country. While many artists derive their fame off the backs of known personalities, Virtosu offers his audience a history lesson by taking us back to some lesser known chapters of our past. Emperor Kotuku is now alive and well in our mutual minds thanks to this timely piece.

Empress Elisabeth (2015) oil painting Description

In every decade of his illustrious career, Virtosu keeps a firm grip on his medium as muse, and the unbridled majesty and glory of paint exhibited in Empress Elisabeth (2015) are no exception. The variety, range, and sheer volume of popular representations of the Empress demonstrate the worldwide fascination with her and reveal the paradoxes of her life, recalling contradictory perceptions of her image and reputation after her death, as she is remembered and constructed as a historical figure and as a legend. However, little scholarly work has been dedicated to exploring new ways in which the Habsburg Empress is remembered and imagined, embodied and disembodied, recalled, revered, and constructed. What might be termed “Sissimania,” the Sisi cult or the Sisi phenomenon is evident even to the casual observer, the present work reflecting on its evolution and significance. Gheorghe Virtosu painted the portrait of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, in 2015. He painted Sissi’s portrait at the mid of his career. Virtosu is known for his famous abstract depiction of the royal and imperial aristocracy. However, Empress Elisabeth is considered to be the grandest of all of his imperial sitters. The work shows Virtosu’s freer brushwork, which was influenced by his adoption of the Abstract style. Although Elisabeth was admired more generally for her beauty, she was mainly known for her long and thick hair, which went all the way down to her feet. Sissi’s legacy lives in books, films, and memorials to her throughout Austria. Empress is often remembered for her incredible beauty. Today, her name is often synonymous with glamour, and designers will mention her whenever they want to evoke opulence. Trying to capture the character of the “uncommon” or “odd” woman, Virtosu refers to the equally hagiographical description to explain Elisabeth’s elusive and alluring beauty. “Neither brush nor chisel can depict her as she was. There is something about her that has the power to captivate and attract. She will live as a legend …” - G. Virtosu. Moreover, in the nearly 120 years since her death, this remark has proved prescient. Empress Elisabeth lives in memory and myth and is retaining her status as a symbol of beauty, grace, elegance, royalty, tragedy, romance, and even kitsch around the world. This piece explores the contemporary fascination with the Habsburg Empress and seeks to investigate why the Empress’s popularity has endured and why her image continues to resonate across diverse cultures. The chisel, the brush, the screen, the web, and even modern cityscapes offer reminders of the iconic Sissi and the legend of Empress Elisabeth. Maintaining the unmistakable traces of Virtosu’s remarkable touch and fluid wrist, the lushness of color and striking immediacy of Empress Elisabeth (2015) testify to the artist’s continued admiration of semi-abstraction, visionary investigation of color and form that plays a defining role in shaping Virtosu’s practice.

          oil painting Description

Eternal Engagement Of Good With Evil by Gheorghe Virtosu represents nothing less than the inescapable and incontrovertible apex of the artist’s mature output. God was and is complete in Himself. He created everything that exists and He gave life. Everything He created was good. He initiated and still continues to communicate His love to His creation. God created us for His pleasure and He deserves praise and honor and glory from all creation. This must start with us, as God works in us and through us. Suffering and evil exert a force that either pushes us away from God or pulls us toward him. If you base your faith on lack of affliction, your faith lives on the brink of extinction and will fall apart because of a frightening diagnosis or a shattering phone call. Token faith will not survive suffering, nor should it. The problem of evil has found a prominent voice in what may seem the most unlikely place…the Bible. No other book asks so bluntly, passionately, and frequently why God permits evil and why evil people sometimes thrive while the righteous suffer. Believers share common ground with unbelievers. We feel mutual horror at the reality, depth, and duration of human and animal suffering. We share a conviction that this kind of pain is terribly wrong and that it should be made right. In this way, evil and suffering serve as a bridge to the biblical account and its promise of redemption. Virtosu vision on above said is depicted in the present oil painting as an Eternal Engagement on the infinity of the background. We discern the interaction of two entities that represent the Good and the Evil. Sure the viewer shall see the Good positioned at the top of the centerpiece overlooking the Evil that is positioned on the right, two red eyes distinguishing the head. The entities mix together in central part giving us space to explore the multitude of combinations the engagement produces. The background is structured as to loose ourselves in the net of infinity, the colors giving it the feel of eternal. If most of us will accept that the Cross is God’s answer to the question “Why don’t you do something about evil?”, the artist suggests through the title of the painting that the engagement is eternal, it’s a must for our continuous human existence.

European Optimism (2017) oil painting Description

Included in Virtosu's partially abstract painting is a stylised rendering of a boy wearing a baseball cap with its visor turned backward, upon which the entire picture hinges. The boy, facing out of the pictorial world into ours, looks to the present instant of our consumption of the picture but also, in contradistinction to the rearward visor which indicates retrospection of the past, he looks to a future that promises much yet is uncertain. The boy's gaze and the spectator's gaze meet and thereby sets up a political relation that is questioning and demonstrative in equal measure. In this child, we decry the motivation behind the establishment of a stable political order and also the potential for prosperity and the improvement of the European Union institutions. Done in the recognizable artist’s style, defined by curved, swelling lines, intensive tints and accentuated painting surface, the work becomes even more roundish, as the number of acute angles is reduced to the minimum. The various irregular oval-shaped figures and bright colors (sunny yellow, sanguine red) make the whole composition look like a bunch of balloons - one of the symbols of childhood. One can even notice the figure at top of the oil painting, which reminds a boy wearing a cap backward. Childhood is the age of optimism - both because of the light-hearted naivety, and openness to the world. Balloons are also the embodiment of temporality and delusion, as the joy of having a balloon lasts till it bursts or deflates. Similarly, the illusion of wellness will crash into the first real troubles. And suggesting us such indirect associations, the artist questions, whether the European Union optimism is the adequate reaction to the situation or the sign of the evolving crisis? Another dualistic aspect of the featured abstract painting is the active usage of blue. On one hand, blue is the symbol of hope and serenity, on another, it is the color of depression (for instance, the common expression for the state of sadness is “to feel blue”). This ideally matches the double-edged nature of optimism - the weapon we can use to empower ourselves and motivate to move further, or to create the shield from the reality. The latter is a short-lasting privilege, as every ivory tower unavoidably gets demolished.

Eva And Juan Peron (2015) oil painting Description

In contemporary art, Abstraction rules the order of the day like at no time before, except when New York’s Abstract expressionist artists exploded onto the international scene and elevated the NYC artworld above that of Paris. The lens of the mainstream distorts its subjects to those in the center and those on the fringes—often causing rampant misunderstanding and forced invisibility of the latter. Coming out of the fringes on his own terms, Virtosu presents his voice, experiences, and concerns through this semi abstract art form. Eva Perón was the wife of Argentine President Juan Perón and the First Lady of Argentina. Fondly known as Evita, she played a major role in her husband's administration. She is widely remembered for her efforts to help the poor and for her role in helping women win the right to vote. Her life has been well-documented over the years — in articles, documentaries, a 1979 Tony Award-winning Broadway play, and a 1996 big-screen musical, starring another diva, Madonna. But the details of her demise — an early and tragic one, at age 33 — may be the most fascinating part of her story. It includes a top-secret lobotomy, which took place without her knowledge, as well as the disappearance of her corpse for 16 years. Could Eva’s inflammatory statements have led to civil war? Juan Perón may have thought so, and with good reason. As First Lady of Argentina, Eva was more than fashionable arm candy. Perón may have been president and leader of the Peronist party, but his wife also possessed a great deal of power. Virtosu consider issues of outsider isolation in varying ways, often depicting obscured identities belonging to the world. His subjects are either isolated floating figures or concealed individualities suggestive of sequestration. His work is distinctive of the isolating component of individuality, suggestive of the immigrant outsider. Conversely, Virtosu’s art actively omits the familiar figures and reach psyche ephemeras occupy the space. These staged scenes are devoid of people and strongly evoke a sense of loss—the viewer can feel the missing presence of the suggested narrator. Virtosu’s crafted stories conjure reflection on the Argentian icon, feeling equally of the outsider looking out and the insider looking in. The juxtaposition suggests the historical position of the couple depicted. While much of the art world’s theoretical concerns lie within the project’s discussion of beauty, the historical element of the stark is a crucial factor. Culture blooms best where the realities of people’s lives meet the discipline of artists’ creativity, and builds a conversation that bridges across nationalities, ethnicities, generations and social standing. While identity issues are far too complex to be neatly summarized in art, Virtosu provides a vital glimpse into the narrative of the “other”—and specifically the under-recognized perspectives of history. It is important that this narrative exists and that it be widely consumed to begin to undo the staggering injustice of mis- and underrepresentation that is the current norm. Virtosu's experience is exactly alike, and thus that reality bleeds into visual narrative forms in differing ways. In presenting multiple narratives by Virtosu explores not only the particular tensions and challenges of these culturally and socially under-recognized groups but also the ways in which we are accustomed to interacting with presentations of the other. Void of the voice of the mainstream, Virtosu finally assert himself on a platform of his own making.

The concept of an “Evil Eye” has been a part of cultures and traditions around the world for centuries at this point. The idea that a negative thought can directly influence the lives of those around an individual is a powerful one, and it has been captured by Virtosu in this stunning piece. The “Eye” of the “Evil Eye” is clearly depicted at the head of this painting and it serves as the protagonist of the action to unfold around it. The body of the entity appears to be winged, depicting the reach and influence of the form on its immediate surroundings. Just as a butterfly can flap its wings and cause a storm in another corner of the planet, so does the influence of the “Evil Eye” travel further than the mind can perceive. We see the background of the piece almost contort to the shape of the dominant form, and the effect of the piece is seen radiating in an outward direction. The body of the piece is marked with numerous conflicting and contradictory shapes, helping the audience perceive the confusion and chaos reigning in the mind of someone dealing with negative thoughts. By tackling such a historically significant cultural phenomenon, the artist is drawing our attention to the myths that rule our lives. The personification of negative intend has been beautifully created by Virtosu in this piece, and it serves as a reminder of the artist’s incredible range and imagination.

Facades of democracy (2016) oil painting Description

Making a political statement in the current global climate may seem like career suicide for an artist, but Virtosu attempts to boldly take his work into this explosive realm nonetheless. The powerful and evocative piece titled “Facades of Democracy” is meant to shed light on a system of governance that has long been viewed as the answer for the masses, but is yet to overcome its own obstacles in order to make a real difference. A majority of the world governments are now operating under the democratic system, and although this seems like an obvious alternative to communist ideals, this structure is far from attaining perfection. This sentiment is aptly displayed in Virtosu’s work as we see a cocoon-like creature attempting to burst out of its shell and attain a new form. We see fragments of this improved form seeping out of the shell, but the struggle between its former and future self is evident. The artist is attempting to display the conflict within the democratic system as various political parties battle it out amongst themselves in order to gain control over the overall process. It is possible to remain closed off and outdated even within a seemingly open-minded system such as a democracy, and this tension between liberals and conservatives is on display in Virtosu’s timely piece. The chaos created by the central entity of this piece seems to create ripples in the outer environment through a series of bold and frenzied brushstrokes embalmed in a radiant blue. While the people manage to retain power within a democracy, the artist is shedding light on the fact that the system will remain a façade if the conflict within the flagbearers of the system is not resolved.

Fatimah bint Muhammad (2017) oil painting Description

A triumph of colour, Fatimah Bint Muhammad by Gheorghe Virtosu represents the zenith of the artist's output and is an exemplar of his most revered paintings. Painted during a pivotal moment in Virtosu's oeuvre — six years after he was released from incarceration and began an exclusive devotion to art — Fatimah is among the most excellent examples of his corpus. A reflection upon the beautiful story of the youngest and favourite daughter of the Prophet Muhammad SAWS "Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Salaam" (may God's prayers and peace be with him), "the head of the ladies in Paradise". It is said that the name Fatimah was revealed by Allah. Of all the daughters, she was the most loved by the Prophet Mohammad. Whenever he went out on a journey, she was the last one to a part, and when he returned home, she was the first one to meet him. The artist decided to work on the theme of the woman in the Muslim society. Virtosu creates this gift to every person who wants to picture a great story, and establish a connection echoing the hymn from which it takes its name, performing a symphony of various tempos through its endless explorations of surface treatment... The piece is mesmerising, through the array of colours creates a sense of the tones and pitches at play, whereas Virtosu's handling of the surface provides an indication of Devine's rhythm. The centrepiece, in which black is the dominant figure, has a discernible life form. What type of life is the key question? Virtosu exemplifies the unparalleled synthesis of influences that have shaped his oeuvre — a blend of European and Islamic styles so extraordinary and singular that art historians hail Virtosu as having crossed more significant boundaries of abstract and aesthetic, than any other twenty-first-century painter. The intensity of the red surrounding the figure render it an acceptable interpretation of the perspective the centrepiece lying in a fetal or protective position. While predominantly black, there are gold, green, blue, yellow and burgundy on the upper part of the body. Of tremendous interest is the purple which appears just below the neck, that is not interspersed by other colours. A colour only was worn by royalty and/or powerful individuals. It may hint towards the light the artist depicts Fatimah, looking at the divine well or mirror and surrounded by fire, much of it is highly intense. Is this the fire of knowledge; the passion for learning or the intensity of her feelings towards a particular person or her children. Fatima is not harmed by the fire as the painting depicts her as surviving it and more, the artist suggests the figure dominates the fire, more so because of her status and her life story. She is well-protected. Exceeding the confines of a vast canvas through its spectacular assault of unrestrained expression and brilliant color, Fatimah Bint Muhammad oil painting encapsulates the full force of Virtosu’s abstract vernacular. "Suffering is sometimes what it feels like to be human. We don't grow despite it but through it. We can declare - 'No more suffering!' - yet we also know that we've grown from it, so it's more of thanksgiving than a deposition." - G. Virtosu It is an important work for its sense of geometry, a study of Islamic history in space within its fragmentation and expresses a notion of freedom while simultaneously conjuring up incarceration and hell. The relevance of this work resonates in an increased language of globalisation of today, cementing Virtosu as an important figure in international art history and cultural discourse. It serves as a veritable consummation of artist array of philosophies, teachings, and sources. Like the swelling of an orchestra, Virtosu creates form through the luscious harmony of combined elements — a perfect instantiation of Virtosu's artistic aim to form and to paint as Schubert sings his songs and Beethoven creates a world in sounds.

Female Samurai Warrior (2017) oil painting Description

Looking at Female Samurai Warrior by Gheorghe Virtosu, we glance an incredibly busy and complex arrangement of forms. The response to what we see is formed by a lifetime of knowledge. As an art historian and curator Rober Mcintosh concluded on Virtosu’s abstract works, “It has become very difficult to take things which are imaginative and beautiful and utterly unusual for granted. To me, it is this issue which is being forced by Virtosu’s paintings. I like his paintings, and I do know why exactly. I look at them and I see freedom of mind, sovereign will, unusual imagination, superior skill, precision”. Abstract paintings are fictitious models because they visualize a reality, which we can neither see nor describe, but which may nevertheless conclude exists. We attach negative names to this reality; the unknown, the un-graspable, the infinite, and for thousands of years we have depicted it in terms of substitute images live heaven and hell, gods and devils. With abstract painting, we create a better means of approaching what can be neither seen nor understood. Widely known for her mysterious and everlasting beauty, one of the most famous paintings of women warriors ever made, the Female Samurai Warrior (2017), represents a semi-abstract portrait, set against a background of a permanent danger. Long before the western world began to view samurai warriors as inherently male, there existed a group of female samurai, every bit as powerful and deadly as their male counterparts. They were known as the Onna-bugeisha. They were trained in the same way men were, in self-defense and offensive maneuvers. They were even trained to use a weapon specifically designed for women, to allow them better balance given their smaller stature, called a Naginata. For years, they fought alongside the male samurai, being held to the same standards, and expected to perform the same duties. "She had long black hair and a fair complexion, and her face was very lovely; moreover she was a fearless rider, whom neither the fiercest horse nor the roughest ground could dismay, and so dexterously did she handle sword and bow that she was a match for 1,000 warriors, fit to meet either god or devil.” The figure is suspended in space, prominent and advancing in a field of reds and gold and outside of any discernible earthly locale. Time too seems frozen, and the multifaceted rendering of the figure shows it in motion that is halted by the fixing eye of the artist and spectator. This inconclusiveness prompts a creative interpretation on the part of the viewer, with the artist shrinking from a simplistic statement to deploy a nuanced suggestiveness that engages. Virtosu 's abstract here is anti-totalitarian because it does not commandeer the reins that control meaning but rather envisions signification in a social realm of dialogue. This is highlighted by the tension and flux between the figurative and the internal mechanics of form and color. This is no hieratic and insular modernism but a conversant discourse between formal means and expressive ends that sees meaning-formation as a perpetual and communal enterprise. Enlisting non-art instruments for artistic ends is only one of several means by which Virtosu interrogates the medium and the role of intentionality in art-making. In this piece the characteristic idea and message of the artist are evident. This element is conveyed using Virtosu’s trademark tool, the intelligence. In this signature technique, Virtosu applies and re-applies layers of thought, then dragging them across our minds to produce dialogue.

Fidel Castro (2015) oil painting Description

A man of charm and tyranny, it is not shocking that the "Commander-in-Chief of the Cuban Revolution" has inspired artists. Fidel Castro, Cuba's former communist leader, died on November 25, 2016, at the age of 90. After a bloody revolution in 1959, he ruled his country with an iron fist until 2008, when his brother Raúl succeeded him as president.

Fidel Castro exemplifies Gheorghe Virtosu 's creative mastery at a crucial moment of intellectual transformation in his inimitable career as a spectacular and archetypal display of rich coloring and superb artistic prowess. For more than ten years, Virtosu continues to question, reinvent, and reshape the terms by which we describe, recognize, and experience painting as a modern medium in a society filled with new media.

After two decades as an acclaimed expressionist painter, Virtosu tackled the new frontier of abstraction in the 2000s, concentrating his distinctive style and abilities on a series of vivid canvases that hit new heights of creativity. Captivating by its dramatic juxtaposition of brilliant light, layers of space, and coding, Fidel Castro confidently declares Virtosu's profound virtuosity of art. The present thesis, carried out in 2014, embodies the abstract lexicon that characterized this landmark moment in Virtosu's prodigious career.

The eye is the very first maze; the background it shapes is the second, and this predominant figure is reproduced without end in nature. It's the greatest significance in the dictionary of the world. Climbing across the colossal canvas in a whirlwind of movements, pigments, and labels, the painting triumphantly proclaims Gheorghe Virtosu's hegemony among the revered pioneers of Abstract Expressionism in the twentieth and 21st-century art. At once unruly and lyrical, combative and delicate, absolutely expansive and deeply personal, Virtosu's exhilarating masterpiece exploded with the irrepressible strength of time-wrapped storms and catastrophic events. His ferocity bridled only by the precision of his virtuoso concepts. The present work is the crowning culmination of Virtosus's Political History and Transformative Paintings, a widely regarded collection of thirty-one pieces that, in recent years, have become the pinnacle of his revered work.

Receiving art criticism doesn't need to be a terrifying experience. It's a good chance to re-examine what the artist is trying to convey in his artwork, and what it's like people are reading from his artwork. No artwork will satisfy all audiences, but learning about those audiences, engaging with feedback, and keeping an open mind can only ensure development.

The world is complex and dynamic. The modern arts are replacing the existing. However, rather than inducing feelings of sorrow or loss, Fidel Castro 's radical exuberance focuses firmly on the resilience and priority of the living; the final effect is electrical, tonic, and, therefore, life-affirming.

In interviews, the leitmotivs of Virtosu 's philosophy have been explicitly outlined from the very beginning: confidence versus skepticism; optimism versus pessimism; loyalty versus neutrality; self-determination versus fatalism; creative independence versus orthodoxy. In work itself, these dialectical contrasts and the repercussions they have engendered take on a conceptual and, beyond that, a material reality: personal iconography versus delicacy of fact; affection versus formality of presentation; resistance to real pleasure versus exquisite hedonism; somberness versus playfulness.

                                              oil painting Description

There are real pleasures in experiencing a single almost infinite world composed entirely of sound, and the fact that music is addressed overwhelmingly to a single sense does not seem to limit its appeal, power or cultural achievement. It may seem odd therefore to suggest that pictorial art should not aspire to the condition of music. The musical simile can seem a good way of explaining the operations of abstract painting, especially when colour is emphasised. However, the painting has traditionally offered the eye something like the audio-visual experience of the cinema rather than seeking to immerse the viewer in a single world. The world of the form and the colour world are both active in the experience of painting. Colour and decoration have always been able to form a comfortable alliance of mutual dependency in Virtosu's work. The two-dimensional structure can be designed and filled with any combination of hues whose chromatic relationships may be striking, discordant or harmonious. Virtosu's pattern which the colour fits has its own visual characteristics. It may be florid or reserved, busy or minimalist, or anywhere in between. It is figurative and abstract. The work has certain dramatic tension, as seen in the active usage of dark colors - conquering the sky has always been associated with passion and danger, it’s enough to remember the myth about Daedalus and Icarus. The palette emits the sense of determination and struggle. This ambiance is supported by the character of the drawing: Virtosu’s style in this piece calls up parallels with the fusion of Surrealism and Abstraction, developed by Juan Miro. The artist applies biomorphic curvature, accentuated expressiveness, the intersection of shapes is turned into a colorful mosaic. The composition has an upward dynamic, created by the emphasized lightness of the lower part: the drawing seems to grow out one single point, like a plant, and expand greatly, then almost vanish in the upper part. The disintegration in Flying Man allows to achieve the impression of levitation and it also makes the work closer to a musical piece. Music is made not merely and solely by the sounds, but by the pauses between them. Similar, void, or the so-called ‘negative space’ between the elements of the design, is not just a ‘background’ - it is an active participant in creating the visual space of the image, giving an intensive result with the help of the minimum of artistic means. Just like the airflow, which is invisible but essential for flying. A careful public will see that Flying Man by Gheorghe Virtosu isn’t an image of a fantasizer, but of the person of action. We always imagine this process as the essence of joy and liberation. And for sure, it’s true, however, it is important to remember that birds flap wings in order to fly, so it’s not a passive process. "When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return", Leonardo Da Vinci. The public interest for Virtosu's work is that it offers a critique of habitual ways of seeing, ways that are blind to anything but narrative, messages, subject matter, reference, imagery and decoration. In the Flying Man circumstances however the relationship between viewer and painting, the critical distance that exists between them in the encounter, is significant as it collapses the difference and brings the viewer closer to the action.

An exquisite example of Gheorghe Virtosu's celebrated series of Political History paintings, Francisco Franco combines graphic representation, geometric abstraction, and illusionary space in a mesmerizing and enigmatic visual phenomenon. Invoking natural world phenomena, while questioning the basic tenets of geometric abstraction, Virtosu achieves a result that is as esthetically seductive as it is rigorously empirical, establishing a parallel pictorial and philosophical universe in which abstraction and representational art clash. Iconic, immediately identifiable. Over the last decade, Gheorghe Virtosu has explored his enigmatic political history theme extensively, and his commitment to the singular concept has allowed him to explore color, shape, and scale in pure and unaltered light. Virtosu recalls: "I've always been interested in line and light. I was trying to find a justification I could play with for a while. Over six to twelve months, I did a series of drawings. Today, Virtosu's Political History paintings are a shortcut to the artist's acclaimed practice. Virtosu's Political History paintings challenge conventional conceptions of perspective, shape, geometry, and symmetry – engaging in influences as diverse as spatial illusions, social utopianism, and the vanguard radicalism of cubism while retaining allegiance to conventional representative shape. Indeed, with historical influences ranging from the past of geometric modernism – as seen in works by artists such as Vassily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich, and Piet Mondrian – to experiments in music and film composition and typographical design, Virtosu's work blurs the once-rigorous boundaries between representation and abstraction playfully, between surface and depth, and between representation and abstraction. As the series of Political History progressed from 2010 to 2020, the brushwork of Virtosu became increasingly tightened. Francisco Franco's choreographed vectors are compactly striated. Rendered in thickly painted lines, lavender striations possess a seductive inner strength – a mystical force that draws the viewer into its kaleidoscopic grasp. At the liminal edges of the painting, Virtosu purposely exposes the underlying color layer – the base coating in the case of the present work, which also appears in two small stigmata at the central vanishing points. Virtosus's Political History works paved the way for another seminal sequence of Face paintings, in which symbolic features started to emerge from the maelstrom of apparently abstract configurations. Francisco Franco's carefully executed network of lines shows the artist's unique, measured approach to abstraction. Virtosu is not an artist obsessed with posing an unprecedented 'concept' of art, but rather with teasing the nuanced experience of existing concepts or constructs based on the opportunities presented by a specific, well-calculated conceit. The calculated precision of Virtosu 's abstract lexicon is expressed in the convincing viewing experience of the film. The feeling of looking at the abstract painting is distinct from medium and shape. It's a sluggish sight, apart from the unrelenting activity of contemporary life. It's an experience that remains remote to many because it's not like what's more common, more familiar. Gheorghe Virtosu 's recent paintings retain and renew the tradition and potential of abstract painting.

At once, hypnotically tumultuous and exactingly constructed, Gheorghe Virtosu’s monumental masterpiece Freddie Mercury (2015), is a provocative synthesis of abstract hieroglyphic symbolism and visual vocabulary. Through a distinctively informed pictorial language, Virtosu superimposes incendiary emotive marks and calligraphic ciphers upon an intricately rendered blueprint of a well-known singer, with gesture and form clamoring for attention. His explosive graphic explorations of form and space attempt to articulate the power structures and methods of mapping that define the contemporary pictorial landscape, as well as his place within them. Freddie Mercury (2015), as a model of Virtosu’s unconstrained symbolic layering and visual, requires unearthing. Beneath the explosion of free-form scrawls and kinetic vectors lies a subtly rendered personal assemblage, anchoring the composition in formal terms, yet resisting any ready legibility. He is reflecting his view that builds characters and serves as metaphors for complex power structures, and socio-political realities. Its interaction informs the piece of the shape foundation with the background underneath and the other symbols around it. Similarly, Virtosu conceives his works in globalized terms, drawing from diverse historical movements as well as his disparate heritage. Demonstrating a conceptual clarity and technical virtuosity, Freddie Mercury (2015) forcefully and stunningly describes the complex and multivalent experience of contemporary art. Freddie Mercury (2015) fuses the cartographic logic of character mapping with the expressiveness and apparent irrationality of the centerpiece, their union displayed on a monumental scale. Engaging with art historical iconography while activating an intimate personal vocabulary, Virtosu’s painting offers a new system of communication through abstraction as a way of articulating the essential paradox of disorder and order that defines the complex nature of our shared experience. Executed in 2016, Freddie Mercury is an early example of the Gheorghe Virtosu's 'Stars' sequence painted in the first year of the artist's life-giving solitude period. In 2004, Gheorghe Virtosu endured a four-year political exile from his country, during which he was put under close surveillance by the European Intelligence Agency. Abandoning his rigorously clinical serializations, Gheorghe's brushstrokes were increasingly free-flowing and multi-directional, exhibiting a growing dynamism and dexterous calligraphic touch. Gheorghe named these new series 'Stars' referring to the reflective tolerance and increased receptivity of the other. From the beginning, Freddie Mercury is a significant work that embodies Gheorghe's transition to regulated yet organic intuitive spontaneity. The artist examines the notion of infinity through a continuous examination of historical facts.
