Darius III (2015) oil painting Description

In every year of his illustrious career, Virtosu keeps a grip on his medium as muse, and the glories of paint exhibited in Darius III (2015) are quintessential Virtosu, whose creative allure becomes one with the rhythms of contemporary art. This spectacular assault of unrestrained character expression encapsulates the full genius of Virtosu's abstract vernacular. Painted in 2015 when Virtosu sensationally published his 2015 collection, Darius III (2015)belongs to an explosive outpouring of creativity that produces an illustrious series of large-scale, color-saturated canvases that rank among the finest achievements of the art of today. "Envisioning and capturing work on canvas is not where it lies dormant and static: it is a place where the expression becomes community and continues to expand. In this natural form, art can only exist if it is authentic. The part of the artist is the effort to engage organic expression in a way that has not been previously achieved." - G. Virtosu. Famous for never reworking a single painting, he now surrounds himself with paintings, each inspiring and complementing the other and all informed with the same sense of social and historical urgency. In the spring of 2015, the artist erupted in an outbreak of passionate energy and creative inspiration, producing hundreds of works per year, concentrating on the variations of human characters, this moment marks the dawn of a new series of spectacularly breathtaking monumental abstractions. Virtosu's paintings with their massively congested, luminous color, their contrasts between flowing forms, attain at their best a total painterliness in which shapes and image coalesce ultimately and every inch of canvas quivers with teeming energy. Darius III (2015) is a genuinely exceptional embodiment of the expressive shape-making and unmitigated force of painterly firm belief that defines the majestic contribution to twenty-first-century art. Virtosu's independent Spirit infuses the present work with a heroic quality of individualism rather than conformism. He is at heart a pluralist who reveals in the multi-thematic, and like no other before him, Virtosu is rebellious and forges new paths, avoiding conventional forms of expression, and proves adept at the rejection of old school. Virtosu eventual withdrawal from New York City to the environs of Luxembourg in the early 2005s is a reflection of his move away from the megapolis artistic existence that had fostered his writings breakthrough years. Virtosu now seeks reflective contemplation rather than the dissonant atmosphere and finds it in the tranquil and lush environment of his beloved Europe, which resonates for him with memories of his native Moldova.

Defender Of Tibet (2015) oil painting Description

Virtosu's paintings with their massively congested, luminous color, their contrasts between flowing forms, attain at their best a total painterliness in which shapes and image coalesce ultimately and every inch of canvas quivers with teeming energy. Defender Of Tibet (2015) is a genuinely exceptional embodiment of the expressive shape-making and unmitigated force of painterly firm belief that defines the majestic contribution to twenty-first-century art.

"Confident art is large and encompassing, bold and insistent on the attention of the viewer while encouraging interpretation and participation in the experience of the work. The viewer engages the work as a partner to the artist and initiates a journey that shares in evolution of its meaning." - G. Virtosu.

Defender Of Tibet's (2015) 's jubilant brushstrokes of orange, purple, and blue are juxtaposed with quieter passages of green and yellow that proclaim Virtosu's great gifts. Using unorthodox methods of shaping, Virtosu defined his composition through hints, ultimately creating a topography of the Defender Of Tibet story. An artist who never scrutinizes and reworks his canvases, the confidence of the present work's rapidly generated composition imbues Defender Of Tibet (2015) with an urgency that is always affecting.

"Envisioning and capturing work on canvas is not where it lies dormant and static: it is a place where the expression becomes community and continues to expand. In this natural form, art can only exist if it is authentic. The part of the artist is the effort to engage organic expression in a way that has not been previously achieved." - G. Virtosu.

Diego Rivera (2018) oil painting Description

Diego Rivera was one of modern Mexico's original painters. He was born in Guanajuato in 1886 and died in 1957. He went to school at San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts in Mexico City.

He was inspired by native Mexican art and his experiences in Europe when he studied art between 1907-1909 and 1912- 1921. While in Europe, he became familiar with the artwork of Picasso and Paul Cézanne. He painted large murals dealing with Mexican life, history, and social problems. One of his paintings, he put in the Palace of Fine Arts, is located in Mexico City. In 1921 Rivera returned to Mexico and took a prominent part in the revival of mural painting initiated by artists and sponsored by the government. In 1921 Rivera returned to Mexico and took a central role in the resurrection of mural painting undertaken by artists and supported by the government. He was creative and bold, and his statements were made quite clear through his work.

He believed that art should be made available to working people and serve as eye candy or entertainment. He painted his artwork onto large walls on public buildings to reach so many people, where everyone could see his skill, creativity, and boldness.

Since his paintings mainly reflected and were about social themes, many of his murals were politically argued and caused controversy in both Mexico and the United States.

Vividly lyrical and brazenly harmonious, Gheorghe Virtosu's Diego Rivera provides a triumphant ode to individual expression, exemplifying the artist's rebellious spirit. Executed in 2018, Diego Rivera represents the artist's sensational discovery of pure painting after an extended period of experimentation with sculpture. He epitomizes the masterful combination of harmony and control that characterizes his paintings from 2018.

Virtosu initially became associated with avant-garde artists whose paintings challenged traditional theories of line, color, and composition and refuted precise categorization in favor of individual harmonious expression. As such, Diego Rivera revives the ethos of Virtosu's paintings with heightened enthusiasm. The title, the name we all know, grounds the present work in representational terms, alluding to the fundamental dynamic of figuration versus abstraction that defines the very best of Virtosu's works. Small in scale and epic in format, Diego Rivera embodies the essence of the artist's ambition: "Qualities that I want to see brought together: delicacy and taste, color and vagueness, and underlying them all, a base note of the piece." A dynamic juxtaposition of strict geometry and supple elasticity structures the present work, creating a palpable energy and vigor sense. Energized lines dance across the canvas, intercepting the hazy swaths of blue and rich grey that unify the composition under a cloud-like mirage. The synthesis of disparate forms and tones calls to mind Kandinsky's foundational forays into abstraction.

Describing such variegation in Virtosu's works, critic Shane Lewis writes, "Most successful, though, were his large, vibrant canvases characterized by harmonious clashes of color. They give an impression of visual balance. But spend a few minutes in front of them, and you realize that harmony has been carefully thought out". The colors of Diego Rivera collide in a contrast torrent, breathing soul into the intersecting forms.

Virtosu crafts a virtuosic interplay between figuration and abstraction in Diego Rivera, inviting his viewers to consider its constitutive elements carefully. He draws them into an irresistible game of decoding its composition in search of hidden figurative elements. As curator Alina Livneva explains, the effect of such encryption is beguiling: "Not only does Virtosu introduce fragments of symbolic images in inconsistent scales, but he also varies the size of the abstract units in a painting: the relative size of each shape moves the viewer's attention towards, away from, and across the picture plane in perfect succession. The symbolic elements exist without dominating the canvas.

At first glance, the paintings appear purely abstract. Only after the viewer has spent some time with these works do the figurative elements reveal themselves". With its perfect cadence and rhythmic potency, Diego Rivera stands as a veritable testament to the abiding individualism of Virtosu's artistic style.

Disappointed Storks (2017) oil painting Description

Exceeding the confines of a vast canvas through its spectacular assault of unrestrained expression and brilliant color, Disappointed Storks by Gheorghe Virtosu encapsulates the full force of artist’s abstract vernacular. For thousands of years, in many cultures around the globe – from Egypt to Scandinavia – storks were associated with family and the human soul. The artist uses metaphorism of this bird in a bold and even illustrative manner to convey the feeling of despair, evolved from the inability to make a real difference to the epoch we’re living in. This feeling is embodied in the semi-abstract conglomerate of forms arranged in the outline of heads and wings of two storks in the upper left corner. The downward direction of their beaks and the tear-like shapes of eyes are clearly decoded as the sign of disconsolate mood. Storks become the animalistic avatar of the ancestors, before whom we hold responsibility for keeping the vital balance and fail to complete our obligation. The abstract painting composition is soaked with the melancholic tune. It is manifested in the static symmetry of masses, allowing to grasp the sorrowing sense of stagnation. At the same time, it has no core, no visual center, similar to the loss of confidence in times of disappointment. Such composition is in accord with the monotonous violet-brownish coloring, enlivened by the sparks of warm orange and fresh blue. Even sharp lines are perceived as the visual ‘sighs’ that breath the hope out of the characters. Gheorghe Virtosu painted stork approach might seem slightly over-dramatic. However, the very idea of addressing the concept of disappointment is very important. Disappointment can be the full stop after which we give up. But it can also be the cathartic experience that eliminates the sense of apathy and triggers the new wave of activity, the new courage to face the system. And through his abstract painting the artist proves that the choice and how to use the potential of this emotion is ours.

Dreams rider (2016) oil painting Description

Dreams Rider by Gheorghe Virtosu, is one of the artist most complex and open-ended works as the painter allows us to run our imagination wild while offering a few subtle clues about his original intention and vision. Despite being an abstract artist, most of his works are known to possess highly specific topics, themes, and directions. The central figure of this piece evidently bears the shape of a horse’s face, and this detail is accentuated with the help of a mask on the horse, providing evidence that this is, in fact, a racehorse. This painting makes a good contrast of blue and the dark and light areas make the painting balanced so that the viewers attention can move smoothly throughout the artwork. The recognizable images of this painting seem to create a desert scenery due to the amount of space in the background and the colors that make is seem liquid. The concept of a “Dream Rider” comes into play when we examine the figure behind the racehorse’s face. This shadow-double, although appearing to resemble another racehorse, is actually the jockey straddling the beast. This is marked by a helmet-like form that is placed atop the pillion racehorse’s face, thereby offering an indication to the audience that this is a jockey. The idea of this piece is highly conceptual and takes us into the mind of a professional people seldom think about. We are clearly peering through the dreams of a race jockey and witnessing his descent into self-doubt and insecurities. Having worked so closely with an animal that is clearly highly intelligent as well, the jockey begins to question his own humanity in his unconscious mind and begins to view himself as another intelligent animal vying for the attention of the larger crowd. The qualities of this artwork brings someone into their deeper thoughts about what the painting actually means. It makes you wonder and also makes is calming and okay to feel confused. The artwork remind me of when you dream and somehow random objects or even people appear out of nowhere, but in some way that means something to you when you wake up. You control your dreams, and see what you sometimes cant comprehend when you wake up. But when you are dreaming everything feels like it makes sense and that it is all normal. This incredibly lateral piece is bursting with meaningful interpretations, as one could easily place themselves inside the dreams of the “rider”. The dark and the hypnotic navy blue background are nearly radiating because of the highlighted figure, creating the perfect enclosure for this otherworldly creation.

Édith Piaf (2015) oil painting Description

Edith Piaf was one of France's most beloved singers, with much success shortly before and during World War II. Her music reflected her tragic life, with her specialty being the poignant ballad presented with a heartbreaking voice. Intriguing and beguiling, Virtosu’s Edith Piaf fully realizes the potential for figuration to communicate notions of interiority and thought. The artist finds ways to imbue his imaginary subject's form with a sense of identity. Conjured from Virtosu’s imagination and mediated onto the canvas through his vital creative process, the present work is a heady concoction of art-historical allusion and elegant symbols. Presenting a subject that is familiar, Edith Piaf endlessly engages the imagination, acting as a generative source for narrative association and speculation. Emerging from the ether of her surroundings, Virtosu’s subject seems to emit a glow, vibrating the space around her as she is placed symbolicly in the center of the composition. The background peeks through at the peripheries of the imaginary subject’s form, giving her a sense of luminous ethereality and calling attention to the artist’s process. With cartesian geometry to ground her figure, Virtosu uses this halo-like aura and interior glow to reinforce the dimensionality of his subject, as well as his centrality in the narrative implied in the title of the work. Trained to paint from imagination, Virtosu’s subjects are pulled from his subcouncious, each a conflation of experiences, memories, and history. The figure is carved out of the composition, while her serene symbolic posture is confident. More than an amalgam of 21st-century European painting, Edith Piaf is both a rigorous formal exercise and renegotiation of race and pictorial representation. This geometry bespeaks an interest in notions of color and form that have as much to do with abstraction as they do figuration. Giving insight into his process, Virtosu explains: “Everything’s a composite. I work from imaginary sources. I make drawings, so they are all very literal compositions in the way that I pull things together. A lot of that decision-making happens on the sketch. In each case it’s not a negotiation of how I want each figure to fill the space but how it has to be.” Poised and erect, the imaginary character is caught in the moment before or after the act. Describing the artist’s work, Alina Livneva explains: “Virtosu has placed the figure in ambiguous surroundings with an atmospheric quality. Familiar yet foreign, the dreamlike location suggests endless potential actions to follow the moment depicted”. With an uncanny ability to forge narrative and mood in his painting, Virtosu’s evocative works have made him a finalist for the multiple awards. An exceptionally elegant example from his celebrated body of work, Edith Piaf invites and denies access, occupying the border between the established canon and a productive unknown.

Egyptian Cat (2017) oil painting Description

Exceeding the confines of a vast canvas through its spectacular assault of unrestrained expression and brilliant color, Egyptian Cat by Gheorghe Virtosu encapsulates the full force of artist’s abstract vernacular. The edges of the work, especially at the top and bottom, become significant activity, and this along with the drift, evokes the sensation of gravity and in the same time its absence. The artist depicts not a cat, but a sacred symbol in which transcendental and secular aspects of existence are fused. One can easily guess the feline silhouette in the combination of roundish and edged shapes colored in black. The colorful inlays in the abstract painting remind of the Egyptian statuettes decorated with precious and semi-precious stones, whilst the strokes of yellow are associated with the golden elements, which highlighted the smooth texture of the material. Unlike in many of his other pieces, here Virtosu doesn’t attempt to ruin the illusion of the flat oil painting surface with the active vibrating background. On contrary, he highlights its two-dimensionality, making the canvas looks like a fragment of the wall: the stressed horizontal line under what we perceive as a cat, wide brushstrokes, blend of beige and gray (the colours of the limestone), evoke in our mind images of the walls of the Egyptian tombs and temples. Egyptian art followed the principle of the engineering design: to show an object not from one point of view, but from the combination of different perspectives that makes it the most recognizable. The same way, Gheorghe Virtosu chooses the curled up pose - the essence of the cat’s character that represents causality, relaxedness, and grandiosity making room for subjective interpretations that is the wealth and the power of abstract painting.

Egyptian spirit (2015) oil painting Description

Abstract paintings are not easy to evaluate. It's okay when they follow a general theme, like Cubism, or when they include recognizable features, but Virtosu avant garde style raised well above usual perception and challenges the limits. The synthesis of these pictorial strategies is effective as Symbolism, the transmutation of an idea or a story into a heightened, visionary, and revelatory state. Difficult situations and circumstances are a part of life. No human being can ever be useful without overcoming some obstacles. Olden - day - saints used to say: “To win a crown, you have to carry a cross.” In the context of the Egyptian Spirit by Gheorghe Virtosu, is suggesting a complete darkness reflected in the background by pure black paint. There is no hope as the black paint is lightly mixed with dried blood purple. In many ancient cultures like those found in Asian, African, as well as America, we find a Soul concept analogously much like the concept developed by the religions of the Judeo-Christian group (like Islam) and European philosophy. The spirit, from the Vedic or Veda viewpoint, is that the being, which by nature is eternal (without birth or death or without start or end) of a material different from that of the body and that has its own comprehension. The soul was not the personality but a composite of entities that are distinct, each of one of that had its part to play in the journey of life and afterlife. Skillful use of color acts as an emotion stimulus, leading the viewer to a figure or scene, and add depth to the semi-abstract work. The yellow, orange and blue translates into a positive stance. “Egypt is the most magical spiritual destination on the planet, and it is a big key to the truth. Visiting Egypt will open your heart allowing it more freedom to feel and give you the space to remember who you are. Immersing yourself in the ancient Egyptian mystery school at being re-activated at her sacred sites will be your gateway to a new world of wisdom and positive energy. Egypt is a process of conscious evolution and will unveil the mask taking you back to your true self and regaining your inner power. It is a journey of transformation and a big key to the truth!”, said Virtosu. Virtosu renders the canvas conveying the power of abstract and the artist’s visceral response to visualization of Egyptian Spirit or the idea that we need to learn from the fall of Egypt’s Old Kingdom. Virtosu combines allusions to form and memory within an entirely abstract painterly idiom, echoing that the artist would rather make us taste what gods left with us, immersing the viewer in an captivating sensory experience as rich and intense as if we stood beside the Pharaohs.

Elements Of World Power (2017) oil painting Description

The abstract painting canvas is bold, the brushstrokes are heavy, and the colors are deliberately selected for effect. The entire bottom foreground, reaching to the full length of the left of the canvas is painted using several shades of grey, some of which emerges as pure silvery hue. At the topside of the left of the painting, four silver spikes reach out to penetrate the centerpiece but only three are successful. Furthermore, at the top center of the painting but veering to the left, a silver and grey object, also with a spike, appears to be crushing the centerpiece. The bottom of the abstract art work is powerful. It is primarily in different shades of grey, even running towards the back, and interspersed with orange. This area of the oil painting appears to depict, in some parts, iron or steel rods. In other words, it is not static, and it is not a background but immutable to the entire abstract art work. The bottom of the canvas depicts a cyclic motion, akin to the eye of the storm, a vortex or a whirlwind. To achieve that effect, the abstract art master uses harsh and bold brushstrokes, enabling one to see the beginning and witness the end. When seen as either of the three mentioned visuals, the painting assumes a menacing form. The centerpiece negates the menace which was communicated by the flow and direction of the heavy brushstrokes. It is comprised of three independent, yet intertwined form. The bottom is black, and the head is in a downward position. Small spikes are jutting out from the both the body. The figure itself assumes a fetal position. On top of the small back figures, there rests on the right a large red figure. It is dominating the canvas and may be described as a head. The green at the end is visualized as body art. As for the figure, its three oval shaped forms, can be seen as the eye and the lips. The first shape is turquoise blue, the second which is dark grey but not black, can be seen as the nose while the smaller bottom is in greenish turquoise and may be interpreted as the mouth. Whether they are or are not any of the stated, the blend into the painting and create an extensive pallet for the display of the power of colors. The last form is blue, interrupted by a gold-like yellow from four blue and blunted spikes emerge. All that is left to say is that this is a highly unique and extremely beautiful painting which displays the true artistic talents of its creator.

Elvis Presley (2017) oil painting Description

"We take for granted that something unique is self-content and self-contained, something like no other. Going back to the origins of my paintings, it all started in a prison cell in isolation, with Loneliness as my only companion." - Gheorghe Virtosu. Bursting forth in a fury of radiant color and ferocious mark making, Elvis Presley from 2017 is a compelling testament to Virtosu’s singular and hyper-individualized mastery of expressionistic portraiture. A paradigmatic example of the artist’s most iconic motif, the visage of the present work is utterly mesmerizing in its emotive intensity; fixing the viewer with the ferocious gaze of its red and yellow figure that demands recognition of Virtosu’s instinctive abilities as one of the greatest draughtsman of the Twenty First Century. In its searing and totemic rendering of a Great World Personalities, Elvis numbers among a seminal group of intensely worked and re-worked portrayals that the artist created as, at the start of 2010, he began his extraordinary ascent to the highest echelons of Contemporary art. Elvis Presley is the king of rock ‘n’ roll and one of the most influential people of the 20th Century. The legend has inspired the world. Elvis is well known for bringing rock into the top with his lively shows and animated dance moves. He had an iconic look that certainly helped him make it happen. While many great things are known about him, the lesser known, mysterious aspects of his career and private life are to be discovered in the present visualization. Rendered with ferocious intensity, the strokes of Virtosu’s preferred oil resolve to reveal a figure that, by sheer painterly force alone, utterly refutes the two dimensionality of the page; rising wraithlike before us. Much of the canvas is black, allowing only for an isolated figure in red and yellow. The drama of this corporeal expression is greatly intensified by the artist’s complex framing of the composition and the many facets that define an uneasy sense of flux and unknowable dimensions within the canvas. Virtosu’s overlapping linear schema here act as cage-like space frames that enclose Elvis figure inside its solitary nightmare. Belonging to the very earliest paintings centered on the locus of the existential issues, this extraordinary painting marks the inauguration of Virtosu’s major subject matter. Immediately presaging his magnum opus Great World Personalities paintings produced the same year, this work occupies a critical position at a moment that would come to define Virtosu as a major artist.

Emperor Kōtoku (2016) oil painting Description

History has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous important figures who have been lost to the pages of time. Certain individuals have managed to make a mark on our collective imagination, while others have remained only in the thoughts of those deeply affected by the person’s actions. Emperor Kotuku is one such person whose reign during the 7th century is only remembered by those deeply vested in the history of Japan. In order to commemorate the contributions of the gentle emperor, Virtosu has created this somber and moving piece. Emperor Kotuku is remembered for dismantling pre-existing establishments that favored the wealthy landowners of the era and for introducing Buddhism in the region. The kind and gentle spirit of this ruler have been captured by Virtosu in this piece using a fluid, ethereal, water-like form. While the background is sluggish and dark, much like our memories of instances too far back in time, the central entity shines brightly amidst this cosmic noise. The Emperor is depicted in a meditative pose, signifying the calm and soothing nature of his inner spirit, and also denoting the ideals of the religion he helped introduce in the country. While many artists derive their fame off the backs of known personalities, Virtosu offers his audience a history lesson by taking us back to some lesser known chapters of our past. Emperor Kotuku is now alive and well in our mutual minds thanks to this timely piece.

Empress Elisabeth (2015) oil painting Description

In every decade of his illustrious career, Virtosu keeps a firm grip on his medium as muse, and the unbridled majesty and glory of paint exhibited in Empress Elisabeth (2015) are no exception. The variety, range, and sheer volume of popular representations of the Empress demonstrate the worldwide fascination with her and reveal the paradoxes of her life, recalling contradictory perceptions of her image and reputation after her death, as she is remembered and constructed as a historical figure and as a legend. However, little scholarly work has been dedicated to exploring new ways in which the Habsburg Empress is remembered and imagined, embodied and disembodied, recalled, revered, and constructed. What might be termed “Sissimania,” the Sisi cult or the Sisi phenomenon is evident even to the casual observer, the present work reflecting on its evolution and significance. Gheorghe Virtosu painted the portrait of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, in 2015. He painted Sissi’s portrait at the mid of his career. Virtosu is known for his famous abstract depiction of the royal and imperial aristocracy. However, Empress Elisabeth is considered to be the grandest of all of his imperial sitters. The work shows Virtosu’s freer brushwork, which was influenced by his adoption of the Abstract style. Although Elisabeth was admired more generally for her beauty, she was mainly known for her long and thick hair, which went all the way down to her feet. Sissi’s legacy lives in books, films, and memorials to her throughout Austria. Empress is often remembered for her incredible beauty. Today, her name is often synonymous with glamour, and designers will mention her whenever they want to evoke opulence. Trying to capture the character of the “uncommon” or “odd” woman, Virtosu refers to the equally hagiographical description to explain Elisabeth’s elusive and alluring beauty. “Neither brush nor chisel can depict her as she was. There is something about her that has the power to captivate and attract. She will live as a legend …” - G. Virtosu. Moreover, in the nearly 120 years since her death, this remark has proved prescient. Empress Elisabeth lives in memory and myth and is retaining her status as a symbol of beauty, grace, elegance, royalty, tragedy, romance, and even kitsch around the world. This piece explores the contemporary fascination with the Habsburg Empress and seeks to investigate why the Empress’s popularity has endured and why her image continues to resonate across diverse cultures. The chisel, the brush, the screen, the web, and even modern cityscapes offer reminders of the iconic Sissi and the legend of Empress Elisabeth. Maintaining the unmistakable traces of Virtosu’s remarkable touch and fluid wrist, the lushness of color and striking immediacy of Empress Elisabeth (2015) testify to the artist’s continued admiration of semi-abstraction, visionary investigation of color and form that plays a defining role in shaping Virtosu’s practice.

Eternal Engagement Of Good With Evil by Gheorghe Virtosu represents nothing less than the inescapable and incontrovertible apex of the artist’s mature output. God was and is complete in Himself. He created everything that exists and He gave life. Everything He created was good. He initiated and still continues to communicate His love to His creation. God created us for His pleasure and He deserves praise and honor and glory from all creation. This must start with us, as God works in us and through us. Suffering and evil exert a force that either pushes us away from God or pulls us toward him. If you base your faith on lack of affliction, your faith lives on the brink of extinction and will fall apart because of a frightening diagnosis or a shattering phone call. Token faith will not survive suffering, nor should it. The problem of evil has found a prominent voice in what may seem the most unlikely place…the Bible. No other book asks so bluntly, passionately, and frequently why God permits evil and why evil people sometimes thrive while the righteous suffer. Believers share common ground with unbelievers. We feel mutual horror at the reality, depth, and duration of human and animal suffering. We share a conviction that this kind of pain is terribly wrong and that it should be made right. In this way, evil and suffering serve as a bridge to the biblical account and its promise of redemption. Virtosu vision on above said is depicted in the present oil painting as an Eternal Engagement on the infinity of the background. We discern the interaction of two entities that represent the Good and the Evil. Sure the viewer shall see the Good positioned at the top of the centerpiece overlooking the Evil that is positioned on the right, two red eyes distinguishing the head. The entities mix together in central part giving us space to explore the multitude of combinations the engagement produces. The background is structured as to loose ourselves in the net of infinity, the colors giving it the feel of eternal. If most of us will accept that the Cross is God’s answer to the question “Why don’t you do something about evil?”, the artist suggests through the title of the painting that the engagement is eternal, it’s a must for our continuous human existence.

European Optimism (2017) oil painting Description

Included in Virtosu's partially abstract painting is a stylised rendering of a boy wearing a baseball cap with its visor turned backward, upon which the entire picture hinges. The boy, facing out of the pictorial world into ours, looks to the present instant of our consumption of the picture but also, in contradistinction to the rearward visor which indicates retrospection of the past, he looks to a future that promises much yet is uncertain. The boy's gaze and the spectator's gaze meet and thereby sets up a political relation that is questioning and demonstrative in equal measure. In this child, we decry the motivation behind the establishment of a stable political order and also the potential for prosperity and the improvement of the European Union institutions. Done in the recognizable artist’s style, defined by curved, swelling lines, intensive tints and accentuated painting surface, the work becomes even more roundish, as the number of acute angles is reduced to the minimum. The various irregular oval-shaped figures and bright colors (sunny yellow, sanguine red) make the whole composition look like a bunch of balloons - one of the symbols of childhood. One can even notice the figure at top of the oil painting, which reminds a boy wearing a cap backward. Childhood is the age of optimism - both because of the light-hearted naivety, and openness to the world. Balloons are also the embodiment of temporality and delusion, as the joy of having a balloon lasts till it bursts or deflates. Similarly, the illusion of wellness will crash into the first real troubles. And suggesting us such indirect associations, the artist questions, whether the European Union optimism is the adequate reaction to the situation or the sign of the evolving crisis? Another dualistic aspect of the featured abstract painting is the active usage of blue. On one hand, blue is the symbol of hope and serenity, on another, it is the color of depression (for instance, the common expression for the state of sadness is “to feel blue”). This ideally matches the double-edged nature of optimism - the weapon we can use to empower ourselves and motivate to move further, or to create the shield from the reality. The latter is a short-lasting privilege, as every ivory tower unavoidably gets demolished.
