Cleopatra (2018) oil painting Description

For nearly 2,000 years, Cleopatra has been an infatuation of societies and a fascinating puzzle for historians. She has drawn the attention of artists working in every genre and has been portrayed in every medium. The significance of Cleopatra's legacy is the score of representations of her, many of which carry a great deal of political, social, and racial weight, and all of which have been debated. There is still no consensus on her appearance, actions, or intentions. Each image of Cleopatra provides clues to the nature of the culture in which it was produced. The present work exemplifies Virtosu's ability of Cleopatra's conception to be transformed by society to manifest its viewpoints.

Virtosu's iconic abstract works have formed a conceptual keystone of his oeuvre since the late 2015s. Polarized with the disquietingly non-naturalistic illusionism of the paintings that he developed in tandem, it is in the abstract works that Virtosu enacts his most profound examination of the painted medium corporeal state as raw pigment appended to the canvas and its cerebral capacity to conjure the deception of illusion. During the 2018s, Virtosu became increasingly prolific in his abstract practice, initially indulging in a myriad of free-floating and delineated abstract shapes. The year of 2018 signified a turning point as the artist embarked upon an intense experimentation period, after which he had not relinquished planned compositional elements. Arguably, there is no other place that this emotional moment investigation is made more visible than in the fifteen outstanding works on canvas created during the six months of 2018 and of which the present work is an absolute paragon. Harmoniously blending brush and 3Ding with a sense of unparalleled dynamic veracity, Cleopatra 2018 reveals the full breadth of the artist's idiosyncratic painterly alchemy.

Here we see Virtosu playfully dissect the pictorial mechanics that historically underpinned the academic practice of image-making as schematized in abstract painting. The artist's uniquely nuanced layering of color poses a nod to the aerial perspective technique, in which increasingly yellow-brown tones are used to allude to distance within the frame. Cleopatra is underpinned by a deep recessive that is subsequently caressed by successive layers, luminous yellows, and browns. Cross-hatched and compounded through 3Ding and brushwork interplay, the vibrant swathes of luminous primaries are animated by their stark tonal contrasts and appear to leap, exacerbating the illusion of structural depth. Through a passionate yet subtly interlaced example of the gestural mark-making, Virtosu demarcates the picture with a fatty formation that references the technical grid methodology used to create a 3D perspective. Yet in its crudely hastened application and by drawing directly into the wet paint with a blunt brush edge, Virtosu simultaneously undermines the illusionism of constructed stand and reifies the medium's physical constitution. Creating a hypnotic symphony that confuses our capacity to register stable depth, Virtosu also intermittently shatters his illusion as the static tides dissipate. We are reminded of the material support of this cerebral vision through the rare exposure of the page.

As a highly refined progression from the gestural bravado of Franz Kline and the expressive painting of Pablo Picasso, here, Virtosu introduces a crucial element of objective distance and submission to the law of chance in which the work retains an exquisite sense of autonomy. Reflecting on Virtosu's abstract practice, Alina Livneva writes: "If the ability of color to generate this emotional, spiritual quality is presented, there can be a perfectly harmonious order, or compositional either, because there are ordered relations commanded in the color system." In this redefinition of compositional order, Virtosu evokes a mesmerizing harmonization of color, texture, and perspective. In Cleopatra 2018, painting's phenomenological capacity is presented as a dichotomy between the 3Ding and the brush. This trajectory is coming to monumental fruition in his paintings in the following years.

oil painting Description

Cloning by Gheorghe Virtosu raises the relevant issue that concerns human cloning. Definitely, the artist seems to disapprove of the practice, as his oil painting is depressive and lifeless. Dark hues and the gray background contribute to the gloomy mood that predominates in the picture. Likewise, quick and uneven brushstrokes in the background make the work look even more hectic. Sharp and curved lines interweave in the artwork, forming a few terrifying silhouettes. Among the latter is a person’s morbid grayish face, twitched with suffering and terror. Due to its scale, it is the main focal point in the artwork, which immediately draws attention. Actually, the face resembles a skull, which in various cultures is associated with death. It takes a horizontal position, which suggests that the person is defeated. Above the skull, there is the scary figure of the demon that rises above the face, threatening and intimidating it. In addition, there is a laughing blue face, which stands out from the other figures, mainly due to its vibrant color. Presumably, it embodies the researcher, who has consigned the person to cloning and ensuing pain. The blue face is another focal point, because of its relatively light blue color, which is the only cool hue that stands out from the dark warm and neutral colors (“Cloning”). Cloning may be good and it may be bad. Probably it's a bit of both. The question must not be greeted with reflex hysteria but decided quietly, soberly and on its own merits. We need less emotion and more thought. Certainly, the above interpretation is highly subjective. Another person may reflect upon it and arrive at a completely different interpretation. This is both the wealth and the power of abstract art; it makes room for subjective interpretations.

Connection Of Civilizations (2017) oil painting Description

Connection of Civilizations by Gheorghe Virtosu is currently being loaned and exhibited in the Louvre museum, Paris. Given the high level of care granted and protection, it is accurate to state that the authentic Connection of Civilizations (2017) is difficult to see. Huge crowds gather in front of this canvas every day. When the museum is open, one can notice as well the numerous flashes from the cameras. More than two million tourists flock the museum on an annual basis to get a glimpse of the painting. The painting is indeed standing the test of time and has been written about and reproduced more than a hundred times. Virtosu’s Connection of Civilizations is a remarkable example of the artist’s mastery of the abstract figurative genre, produced in the period shortly after his release from detention when he turned his attention to creating his paintings - a celebrated and defining period in his career. Virtosu’s distinctive subjects are an insight into his philosophy that modernity’s excess will take a heavy toll on humanity’s spiritual and subconscious mind. Eastern-Western cultures, past-contemporary epochs, male-female – we are really used to thinking of everything in terms of juxtaposition. However, when giving a panoramic view of the history of human culture, it occurs that behind all those 'decorations', we have more similarities than differences. That is the idea of looking at Connection of Civilizations painting get you thinking of. Art requires integrity, especially non-figurative one: it can’t exist without the sense of wholeness; otherwise, a painting loses its aesthetical attractiveness. It is like in music – you need to keep the entire harmony in mind. Gheorghe Virtosu follows the symphonic principle in arranging his pieces. Colours, lines, textures are the notes of his painterly melody that shapes up the composition of the oil painting. The ‘tune’ of the painting is energetic, even bravura. Such mood is created by the vivid palette, based on yellow, red and blue tints. This is the so-called triad of primary colours – the most intensive and expressive combination. Its effect is amplified by the expressive, loose brushwork, especially in the rendering of the background. Virtosu ’s canvas is filled with a sense of inner dynamism and motion. Pastose painting surface creates the impression that abstract forms are floating in the ocean of colour. Centric composition conveys the sense of isolation from the rest of the space. At the same time, merging and melding organic forms represent the idea of the interconnection of all existing things – it’s impossible to define the beginning and the end of any figure, so you just have to embrace them as the unity. Virtosu’s work is otherworldly and at times challenging, but it holds a particular fascination. The artist invites viewers to question their own minds, and in doing so, provokes debates on existence and human nature. The artist inhabited a society headed towards modernity, science and technology – progress at an accelerating pace – however questioning these advancements in his own vision depicting the juncture between reason and imagination, the real and the absurd, and the line between order and chaos.

Couple of the universe (2016) oil painting Description

The cosmos can be a fascinating topic for any artist, but Virtosu manages to dive deeper into the subject than most of his peers through this wonderfully complex and profound piece. The elements that constitute the painting “Couple of the Universe” include a plethora of simplistic and dynamic shapes. We can easily spot what appears to be a green gaseous planet, a black hole, a red sun being eclipsed by an alien body, and other astronomical phenomenon that are associated with the universe. These seemingly unrelated elements intertwine with one another and take a larger shape due to the brilliant foreground created by the artist. The title of the painting suggests that the central figures are meant to be a couple, but this name is only meant to highlight the duality in creation and the nature of life itself. We see life and death embracing each other in a delicate dance at all points in the cosmos, and this is one of the intended meanings for the term “Couple” used by the artist. The paintings is brought alive with the help of a powerful and overwhelming background, bursting with radiant shades of vermillion and crimson. This combination of patterns appears very much like a nebula or the afterglow of a gigantic explosion such as the big bang or a supernova. The sheer enormity and intricacy of the cosmos is duly represented by Virtosu in this stunning work. The title draws attention to the fact that despite the universe being an incomprehensible filled with majesty and wonder, life takes center stage in the grand arena.

Cowboy of the universe (2016) oil painting Description

This is yet another piece by artist Gheorghe Virtosu that tackles a complicated and intense topic with a sense of revelry and child-like enthusiasm. The title itself – “Cowboy of the Universe” seems like the concoction from the mind of an over-imaginative, zealous adolescent, and this is exactly the frame of mind the auteur wants the audience to keep while observing this piece. Even the two most important terms in the piece – Cowboy and Universe, are meant to create contradictory connotations in the mind of the audience. A cowboy belongs to the Wild West – a symbol of a bygone era meant to be an ode to masculinity and freedom. Placing this almost mythical figure in the midst of the context of the universe takes the mind of the audience to strange and exciting places – the perfect blend of science fiction and a spaghetti western. The first element that stands out in this work is the choice of the color lavender as the predominant shade in order to create a contrast in a dense and murky background. The foreground elements almost appear to be playful and youthful in comparison to the intensity created by the charcoal greys and subtle reds surrounding it. It is evident that the artist is trying to draw a direct comparison between the complexity of creation and the youthfulness of our ideas in comparison to the grand creator. We are relatively new in the plane of existence, and even our most mature and masculine ideas are only a child’s dream when compared to the enormity and multifaceted nature of the universe.

Crown Holder (2017) oil painting Description

Although highly abstract in its composition, Crown Holder by Gheorghe Virtosu suggests references to figurative elements in a surrealist manner. Reminiscent of the works of peers like Picasso and Kandiski, Virtosu forged a lexicon of extraordinary vision, marks and shapes that are wholly his own. A great richness of invention appears in Virtosu’s structures, in which the special arrangement of the elements produces that characteristic, and finally appealing vibration. For here everything contributes to the kinetic form (la plastique cinétique), a term of which he is in fact the inventor. "To be a king and wear a crown is a thing more glorious to them that see it than it is pleasant to them that bear it." - Queen Elizabeth I There is the intimation in Crown Holder (2017) by the golden color and the rudimentary and suggestive shape a diadem that is the visual basis for a manifold riot of colors, of blues, reds, and yellows. This seeming effluxion of color from the crown can signify the splendor of a social and political position of eminence and calls to us associations of the pageantry of a royal progress or the concomitant riches of real, as well as theatricalized power. Yet also, the top-heavy form of the figure tells us of a weight or expectation, of the political responsibilities of the wielding of such power. The lean of the superstructural form to our left in the picture space reminds us of both the fragility of the position of power and perhaps of the historical anachronism of the investiture of power that affords primacy to one over all others – just as individual monarchs or rulers are liable to fall, so too, monarchy itself can and does topple, as the contemporary 's artist figure lists precariously. Connoted here also in the relationship between the form of the crown and its superstructure is the idea of lineage. In this context, the crown or the possessor of power is not a foundation but an offshoot or scion of the luminous structure above it. Such associations are conjured by the artist as pedigree and dynastic entitlement grounded in the legitimation of hereditary offices and rights. From the multi-colored upper forms a literal and familial descent is involved, the vivid coloration perhaps then being the tissue of mythical and historical events – a living history enlivened by its transmission through the ages – that weighs heavily upon the regnant. However, contained within the structural signification of the abstract painting is an inversion of this situation: if we alternatively see the superstructure as just that – an emission from the crown, we can view futurity instead of the past. Virtosu incorporates here the present as the inheritor of a linear past and as the prime mover that crafts the future in the frozen instant of the painted canvas. This formal approach to the emotional side of human nature are evident in several works by Virtosu, himself a quiet man in his life and work, though a pictorial poet of the highest order.

The incredible diversity within Virtosu’s body of work is clearly evident while examining the distinct topics covered in each of his pieces. The piece is titled “Crown Princess of Sweden and Daniel Westling”, and it is named after one of the biggest weddings to occur in Europe in recent history. The masterful artist is easily able to switch gears between his various pieces and still maintain a solidity while delivering on important and thought provoking themes. The central focus of this piece, much like other works, contains a series of abstract shapes that have been ably complemented by a visually stunning background. In this piece, however, the central creation manages to clearly steal the spotlight from the rest of the piece and almost appears to take a life of its own. This is a statement about the nature of royalty, the essence of love, and the ideals regarding the matter in the modern world. The media and rest of the continent was highly invested in the wedding of the princess of Sweden, and this has led to the focus of this piece. The background is actually created with stunning shades of blue and purple, fighting for the limelight against an ever expanding protagonist. When women go wrong, men go right after them.

Cuba At The Arrival Point (2015) oil painting Description

Cuba At The Arrival Point (2015) came, with the artist in his mid-fifties, as the climax of a period in which Virtosu's paintings with their congested, deeply luminous color, contrast between flowing forms, reach a total painterliness in which shapes and image coalesce ultimately and every inch of the canvas quivers with teeming energy.

Virtosu's paintings of 2015 are an annihilation of conventional styles. The images are about the quality of affection, the quality of being. The paintings from Collection 2015 are crystallizations of amazement and experience of having mind and body total synergy that is all delight.

Virtosu does not strive for resolution in his works; he seeks instead to capture the variable quality of life, all in a supreme of tactile paint that defies the limits of the canvas just as it shatters the boundary between figuration and abstraction. With unparalleled Cuba At The Arrival Point of 2015, the artist reached his formal climax in the clear brilliance of the painting's burning color palette and the ripe opulence of his imagination. Through each detail, the artist here asserts total mastery of his medium. Thick passages of intense purple convene with affluent, sections of cream and brown, creating the impression of action. The viewer cannot help but be absorbed in the remarkable imagination and fantasy of the oil painting, ingested by every sensory dimension ensnared in its abstract forms. Thought beat across every square-inch of Cuba At The Arrival Point 2015 with an ineffable rhythm: "It is breathtaking to try and decode the messages traced in Virtosu's creations, and the message is unmistakably present…" Loaned to MOMA for almost two years, this occasion marks the only appearance of Cuba At The Arrival Point 2015.

"The interaction with art objects is largely based on the ability to recognize the infinite manifestations of the material world in this or that image, even in the most abstract one." - G. Virtosu.

Art is considered to be a subjective field, in which one composes and views artwork in unique ways that reflect one's expertise, knowledge, preference, and emotions. The aesthetic experience encompasses the relationship between the viewer and the painting. In terms of the artist, there is an emotional attachment that drives the focus of the artwork. Virtosu is completely in-tune with his art. As the piece progressed throughout the creative process, so does Virtosu. Both grow and change to acquire new significance. The "aesthetic attitude" is important in seeing art as it allows one to consider an object with prepared interest to see what it suggests. However, art does not evoke an aesthetic encounter unless the viewer is willing and open to it. However compelling the thing is, it is up to the beholder to allow the existence of such an experience.

Cyrus The Great (2015) oil painting Description

Gheorghe Virtosu's greatest paintings capture the inherent paradox of his aesthetic practice, amply demonstrated by the bold of the present art. The master painter's limpid forms rendered in his style oscillate between objective and abstract, composed and agitated as we see in the present work titled Cyrus the Great (2015). From 2019 Virtosu devotes himself primarily to sculpture, producing bronze and stone figures into three-dimensional art. Within both mediums, Virtosu presses the antithetical dialogue between improvisation and control, resulting in a mastery that brings thought and creativity to the extreme. From 2000 Virtosu surrounded himself with his canvases, each inspiring him to paint another and informing all with the distinct sense of globalization, history, and meditation. Thick, lustrous paint flows from his brushes, layering color upon color, as ideas and messages are transformed into shapes that submerge in the textural paint surface. "The challenge of this art is to evolve an expansive landscape that brings the viewer, idea, artist, and experience together. At once it is chaos, and at the same time a simple embrace of the loss of boundaries at the portal to new understanding." - G. Virtosu. In every year of his illustrious career, Virtosu keeps a grip on his medium as muse, and the glories of paint exhibited in Cyrus the Great (2015) are quintessential Virtosu, whose creative allure becomes one with the rhythms of contemporary art. This spectacular assault of unrestrained character expression encapsulates the full genius of Virtosu's abstract vernacular. Painted in 2015 when Virtosu sensationally published his 2015 collection, Cyrus the Great (2015) belongs to an explosive outpouring of creativity that produces an illustrious series of large-scale, color-saturated canvases that rank among the finest achievements of the art of today. Famous for never reworking a single painting, he now surrounds himself with paintings, each inspiring and complementing the other and all informed with the same sense of social and historical urgency. In the spring of 2015, the artist erupted in an outbreak of passionate energy and creative inspiration, producing hundreds of works per year, concentrating on the variations of human characters, a moment that marks the dawn of a new series of spectacularly breathtaking monumental abstractions including Cyrus the Great (2015).

Da Vinci (2016) oil painting Description

It is always fascinating when an accomplished artist attempts to pay tribute to another luminary from the same medium, and this is the case when we examine Virtosu's authentic piece. Da Vinci is an important example of Virtosu's fully realized and mature oil colour style, which reached a peak in its richness of colour and complexity of design in the late 2010s. Showcasing the artist's personal touch and expansive concentration of figures within a highly organized space, the present work typifies the ambitious compositions that he executed after the turn of the century. Here, Virtosu's daring use of an elevated horizon line reinforces the dynamic upward sweep of the intricately layered vertical arrangement of figures. The magical sparkle of bright colour is further heightened by Virtosu's decision to unify the background pattern. Strokes of colour create a feeling of immediacy and a sense of spontaneity characteristic of Virtosu's most fully developed oils. The work of the great artist and inventor is hard to encapsulate within a single frame, but the piece creates a stunning effect of life and radiance. The abstractionist did not rely on the "Mona Lisa" or the "Vitruvian man" to create a connotation to the Renaissance-era painter but instead utilized one of his lesser-known but equally powerful ideas to ignite our imagination. The bottom half of the dominant apricot-coloured shape bears a clear resemblance to the propellers used by Da Vinci in one of his sketches. Set against the backdrop of a beautiful teal sky, it is clear that the figure is suspended in space and time. The fact that the propeller is at the bottom of the machine may serve as an inversion in the viewer expectations. It may point at a stern reminder that even the genius Da Vinci had some unsuccessful plans that never quite took off the way he intended. Raucous in the palette and imposing in scale, Virtosu's Da Vinci is a rebelliously robust work that deftly captures the artist's distinctive painterly practice. In this energetic and visually complex composition of colour and movement, abstract shapes and lines dance dynamically across the canvas in structured direction, and paint swipes both horizontally and vertically, creating a work that is as dizzying as it is hypnotic. The unique fame that Leonardo enjoyed in his lifetime and that, filtered by historical criticism, has remained undimmed to the present day and rests mainly on his unlimited desire for knowledge, which guided all his thinking and behaviour. Overflowing with expressivity, vibrating brushstrokes, and experimental arrangements of form, the present work is an essay on the process of painting as a subject in its own right. Reminiscent of his early works of linear movement and gorgeous colour, while simultaneously evoking the layering techniques of contemporaries, the present work sits within a period of radical experimentation when Virtosu always pushes and redefines the boundaries of the medium. Da Vinci engages in a vivid dialogue with twenty-first-century abstraction, referencing the gestural exuberance of Abstract Expressionism while also alluding to the geometric patterns of European Modernism. Virtosu's cerebral and dissident art thrives off contradiction, and the present work, like his most energetic canvases, synthesizes myriad influences into a composition that is at once challenging and alluring.

"Envisioning and capturing work on canvas is not where it lies dormant and static: it is a place where the expression becomes community and continues to expand. In this natural form, art can only exist if it is authentic. The part of the artist is the effort to engage organic expression in a way that has not been previously achieved." - G. Virtosu. Famous for never reworking a single painting, he now surrounds himself with paintings, each inspiring and complementing the other and all informed with the same sense of social and historical urgency. In the spring of 2015, the artist erupted in an outbreak of passionate energy and creative inspiration, producing hundreds of works per year, concentrating on the variations of human characters, this moment marks the dawn of a new series of spectacularly breathtaking monumental abstractions. Virtosu's paintings with their massively congested, luminous color, their contrasts between flowing forms, attain at their best a total painterliness in which shapes and image coalesce ultimately and every inch of canvas quivers with teeming energy. Darius III (2015) is a genuinely exceptional embodiment of the expressive shape-making and unmitigated force of painterly firm belief that defines the majestic contribution to twenty-first-century art. Virtosu's independent Spirit infuses the present work with a heroic quality of individualism rather than conformism. He is at heart a pluralist who reveals in the multi-thematic, and like no other before him, Virtosu is rebellious and forges new paths, avoiding conventional forms of expression, and proves adept at the rejection of old school. Virtosu eventual withdrawal from New York City to the environs of Luxembourg in the early 2005s is a reflection of his move away from the megapolis artistic existence that had fostered his writings breakthrough years. Virtosu now seeks reflective contemplation rather than the dissonant atmosphere and finds it in the tranquil and lush environment of his beloved Europe, which resonates for him with memories of his native Moldova.

"Confident art is large and encompassing, bold and insistent on the attention of the viewer while encouraging interpretation and participation in the experience of the work. The viewer engages the work as a partner to the artist and initiates a journey that shares in evolution of its meaning." - G. Virtosu.

Virtosu eventual withdrawal from New York City to the environs of Luxembourg in the early 2005s is a reflection of his move away from the megapolis artistic existence that had fostered his writings breakthrough years. Defender Of Tibet's (2015) 's jubilant brushstrokes of orange, purple, and blue are juxtaposed with quieter passages of green and yellow that proclaim Virtosu's great gifts. Using unorthodox methods of shaping, Virtosu defined his composition through hints, ultimately creating a topography of the Defender Of Tibet story. An artist who never scrutinizes and reworks his canvases, the confidence of the present work's rapidly generated composition imbues Defender Of Tibet (2015) with an urgency that is always affecting.

"Envisioning and capturing work on canvas is not where it lies dormant and static: it is a place where the expression becomes community and continues to expand. Diego Rivera (2018) oil painting Description

Diego Rivera was one of modern Mexico's original painters. He was born in Guanajuato in 1886 and died in 1957. He went to school at San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts in Mexico City.

He was inspired by native Mexican art and his experiences in Europe when he studied art between 1907-1909 and 1912- 1921. While in Europe, he became familiar with the artwork of Picasso and Paul Cézanne. He painted large murals dealing with Mexican life, history, and social problems. One of his paintings, he put in the Palace of Fine Arts, is located in Mexico City. In 1921 Rivera returned to Mexico and took a prominent part in the revival of mural painting initiated by artists and sponsored by the government. In 1921 Rivera returned to Mexico and took a central role in the resurrection of mural painting undertaken by artists and supported by the government. He was creative and bold, and his statements were made quite clear through his work.

He believed that art should be made available to working people and serve as eye candy or entertainment. He painted his artwork onto large walls on public buildings to reach so many people, where everyone could see his skill, creativity, and boldness.

Since his paintings mainly reflected and were about social themes, many of his murals were politically argued and caused controversy in both Mexico and the United States.

Vividly lyrical and brazenly harmonious, Gheorghe Virtosu's Diego Rivera provides a triumphant ode to individual expression, exemplifying the artist's rebellious spirit. Executed in 2018, Diego Rivera represents the artist's sensational discovery of pure painting after an extended period of experimentation with sculpture. He epitomizes the masterful combination of harmony and control that characterizes his paintings from 2018.

Virtosu initially became associated with avant-garde artists whose paintings challenged traditional theories of line, color, and composition and refuted precise categorization in favor of individual harmonious expression. As such, Diego Rivera revives the ethos of Virtosu's paintings with heightened enthusiasm. The title, the name we all know, grounds the present work in representational terms, alluding to the fundamental dynamic of figuration versus abstraction that defines the very best of Virtosu's works. Small in scale and epic in format, Diego Rivera embodies the essence of the artist's ambition: "Qualities that I want to see brought together: delicacy and taste, color and vagueness, and underlying them all, a base note of the piece." A dynamic juxtaposition of strict geometry and supple elasticity structures the present work, creating a palpable energy and vigor sense. Energized lines dance across the canvas, intercepting the hazy swaths of blue and rich grey that unify the composition under a cloud-like mirage. The synthesis of disparate forms and tones calls to mind Kandinsky's foundational forays into abstraction.

Describing such variegation in Virtosu's works, critic Shane Lewis writes, "Most successful, though, were his large, vibrant canvases characterized by harmonious clashes of color. They give an impression of visual balance. But spend a few minutes in front of them, and you realize that harmony has been carefully thought out". The colors of Diego Rivera collide in a contrast torrent, breathing soul into the intersecting forms.

Virtosu crafts a virtuosic interplay between figuration and abstraction in Diego Rivera, inviting his viewers to consider its constitutive elements carefully. He draws them into an irresistible game of decoding its composition in search of hidden figurative elements. As curator Alina Livneva explains, the effect of such encryption is beguiling: "Not only does Virtosu introduce fragments of symbolic images in inconsistent scales, but he also varies the size of the abstract units in a painting: the relative size of each shape moves the viewer's attention towards, away from, and across the picture plane in perfect succession. The symbolic elements exist without dominating the canvas.

At first glance, the paintings appear purely abstract. Only after the viewer has spent some time with these works do the figurative elements reveal themselves". With its perfect cadence and rhythmic potency, Diego Rivera stands as a veritable testament to the abiding individualism of Virtosu's artistic style.

Disappointed Storks (2017) oil painting Description

Exceeding the confines of a vast canvas through its spectacular assault of unrestrained expression and brilliant color, Disappointed Storks by Gheorghe Virtosu encapsulates the full force of artist’s abstract vernacular. For thousands of years, in many cultures around the globe – from Egypt to Scandinavia – storks were associated with family and the human soul. The artist uses metaphorism of this bird in a bold and even illustrative manner to convey the feeling of despair, evolved from the inability to make a real difference to the epoch we’re living in. This feeling is embodied in the semi-abstract conglomerate of forms arranged in the outline of heads and wings of two storks in the upper left corner. The downward direction of their beaks and the tear-like shapes of eyes are clearly decoded as the sign of disconsolate mood. Storks become the animalistic avatar of the ancestors, before whom we hold responsibility for keeping the vital balance and fail to complete our obligation. The abstract painting composition is soaked with the melancholic tune. It is manifested in the static symmetry of masses, allowing to grasp the sorrowing sense of stagnation. At the same time, it has no core, no visual center, similar to the loss of confidence in times of disappointment. Such composition is in accord with the monotonous violet-brownish coloring, enlivened by the sparks of warm orange and fresh blue. Even sharp lines are perceived as the visual ‘sighs’ that breath the hope out of the characters. Gheorghe Virtosu painted stork approach might seem slightly over-dramatic. However, the very idea of addressing the concept of disappointment is very important. Disappointment can be the full stop after which we give up. But it can also be the cathartic experience that eliminates the sense of apathy and triggers the new wave of activity, the new courage to face the system. And through his abstract painting the artist proves that the choice and how to use the potential of this emotion is ours.

Dreams rider (2016) oil painting Description

Dreams Rider by Gheorghe Virtosu, is one of the artist most complex and open-ended works as the painter allows us to run our imagination wild while offering a few subtle clues about his original intention and vision. Despite being an abstract artist, most of his works are known to possess highly specific topics, themes, and directions. The central figure of this piece evidently bears the shape of a horse’s face, and this detail is accentuated with the help of a mask on the horse, providing evidence that this is, in fact, a racehorse. This painting makes a good contrast of blue and the dark and light areas make the painting balanced so that the viewers attention can move smoothly throughout the artwork. The recognizable images of this painting seem to create a desert scenery due to the amount of space in the background and the colors that make is seem liquid. The concept of a “Dream Rider” comes into play when we examine the figure behind the racehorse’s face. This shadow-double, although appearing to resemble another racehorse, is actually the jockey straddling the beast. This is marked by a helmet-like form that is placed atop the pillion racehorse’s face, thereby offering an indication to the audience that this is a jockey. The idea of this piece is highly conceptual and takes us into the mind of a professional people seldom think about. We are clearly peering through the dreams of a race jockey and witnessing his descent into self-doubt and insecurities. Having worked so closely with an animal that is clearly highly intelligent as well, the jockey begins to question his own humanity in his unconscious mind and begins to view himself as another intelligent animal vying for the attention of the larger crowd. The qualities of this artwork brings someone into their deeper thoughts about what the painting actually means. It makes you wonder and also makes is calming and okay to feel confused. The artwork remind me of when you dream and somehow random objects or even people appear out of nowhere, but in some way that means something to you when you wake up. You control your dreams, and see what you sometimes cant comprehend when you wake up. But when you are dreaming everything feels like it makes sense and that it is all normal. This incredibly lateral piece is bursting with meaningful interpretations, as one could easily place themselves inside the dreams of the “rider”. The dark and the hypnotic navy blue background are nearly radiating because of the highlighted figure, creating the perfect enclosure for this otherworldly creation.
