Brothers in struggle (2016) oil painting Description

Every relationship is burdened with its own set of complexities, but few jousts can be as rousing as two brothers locked in rivalry. Virtosu attempts to narrow his focus on a singular conflict between blood relatives, and the result is a gorgeous and complex piece, soaked in equal parts of passion and distain. The word “struggle” has been purposefully placed in the title in order to highlight the literal nature of the conflict that is being depicted on canvas. This is evidenced by the maroon marks intended as blood stains casually placed around the central entity, as well as in crucial points within the piece itself. The artist has not left the nature of the conflict to our imagination, but has instead chosen to create a visceral representation of the feud in this brutal piece. The choice of selecting two dominant tones within the center of the piece is intentionally done in order to create a distinguishing line between the brothers themselves. The heated nature of the conflict may have seemingly melded the siblings into one entity, but there is no mistake that they are individuals, fighting for their own voice and stake. The background takes a backseat to action intended to occur at the center of the ring, the choice of blues and greys indicating that the struggle is unfolding on a perfectly pleasant day. The artist is effortlessly able to draw our attention to the nature of sibling rivalry, the cost of maintaining relationships, and to the passion brewing within each conflict with a loved one in this effervescent piece.

Buddha Dharma (2015) oil painting Description

Breathtaking in scale and ambitious in execution, Buddha Dharma by Gheorghe Virtosu is a painterly tour-de-force, wrapping the viewer in a bizarre and enthralling realm in which broad strokes of sumptuous paint and saturated, Fauvist hues playfully mask the darker absurdities that play out in this dystopian panorama.

Buddha Dharma, is Buddha’s teachings and the outer experiences or realizations of these teachings. Buddha gave eighty-four thousand teachings. Dharma does not stay in one place but moves from one country to another. Is precious and rare just as gold, so very hard to find. Buddha taught how to examine our mind and see which states produce misery and confusion and which states produce health and happiness, how to cultivate the virtuous minds that free us from pain and lead us to the bliss of full enlightenment. By following, we will have the opportunity to gain the happiness we seek and fulfill all our wishes.

Interweaving the opposing forces and themes of construction and destruction, possibility and impossibility, abstraction and figuration, Virtosu mines both the history of art and his visionary imagination to create a modern-day fresco that collapses time, sound, and space within the two-dimensional picture plane. The composition of this very large picture has the complexity and control of modern abstraction.

A kaleidoscopic vortex of line, color, and form, the ferocious intensity of Virtosu’s Buddha Dharma sears through innumerable layers of pigment to encapsulate the virtuosic, riotous, and eternally enigmatic spirit of Contemporary art. With the electrifying force, the skeins of color ricochet out from a central core to cascade and fracture around the margins, confronting the viewer with the essential, primal physicality which distinguish the most compelling masterpieces of the artist’s celebrated oeuvre.

The piece assaults the primeval boundaries between abstraction and figuration with intoxicating graphic unruliness renegotiating such disparate legacies to announce the arrival of an unprecedented painterly force in the twenty-first century. Vibrating with a thrilling vertiginous motion, the painting evades a fixed image, instead creating a pictorial realm where energy merges with the material application of paint to defiantly challenge the strict formal organization of Modernist painting. Virtosu problematizes the slipperiness of the authorial gesture in contemporary art with remarkable bravado, defiantly imbuing his gestural abstraction with a vigorously beating human pulse.

Buddha In Meditation (2017) oil painting Description

Buddha In Meditation by Gheorghe Virtosu is a veritable treatise upon Twentieth First Century social history, deftly employing shrewd references to masterpieces and popular culture alike to create a compositional narrative both entirely fresh and acutely culturally relevant. Virtosu is revered for his unique style of narrative figuration, and its capacity to address and investigate cultural stereotypes and tropes with unprecedented candor. Virtosu’s polyrhythmic, improvisational paintings are full of surprises – in juxtapositions of forms and colors, in distortions of scale, in inventions and interplays of space and structure. Virtosu’s paintings are the work of a contemporary British painter fully aware of the entire spectrum of the global social fabric and culture. The incipient and delicately outlined orbs in this calmative blue-green background suggest a harmonious cosmos that seems to emanate outwards from the Buddha just as his state of contemplation has a pervasive influence in the world in the continuance of the global popularity of the Buddhist way of life. Perhaps, conversely, the harmony of the universe and all its parts can be said to be the spiritual state to which the Buddha has attained, as the background colors in the abstract painting permeate his form in the picture, the blues intersecting and soaking into him here. The mood of meditation is enhanced by the artists 's use of browns and black around the face and its intently clamped eye. This could be a sign of the surrender of the egoist self to a cosmological unity of which a person is a minuscule element. Also, this could be a reference to and a measure of the particular stage of the Buddha's meditation – one of intense exploration through a renunciation of the self as the dark colors reveal a numinous rather than a fleshly or worldly concern and signal the lability and transience of all material things. The legs of the Buddha figure are painted with great delicacy and rendered in the form of the lotus position in meditation. This flower's great symbolic significance in Eastern religion can signify such things in Buddhism as good fortune and spiritual enlightenment. The artist 's choice of color for the legs is telling as the blue, red and gold in the Buddhist symbolism of the lotus flower refer to wisdom through reason, compassion and love, and the attainment of complete enlightenment respectively. The fact that the figure wears a cap ties it also to a more modern milieu while lending it a social specificity – perhaps an allusion to the continued growth of interest in the Buddhist religion and way of life in the East and in the West. The epithet 'Buddha', means 'the awakened one' and so we see our figure here, his eyes tightly shut, as asleep to the materiality and pragmatism of the present world while he is, through a re-orientation of the mind, profoundly awake to the true reality of the spiritual universe. With the artist's juxtaposition of the old and the modern, in this large buddha painting we are presented with a rare island of stillness, an ancient antidote to the increasing distraction of contemporary life, and the persistent relevance of the Buddhist message. While Virtosu’s pastiche of sketches illustrates individual stories and occurrences, each narrative ultimately unites to form a complex depiction of Asian subjectivity: his figures are not mere placeholders, but are activated as objects of desires, as heroes, as victims and victors, feared and fearsome, hurt and hopeful. Within Buddha in Meditation, the viewer is lured into Virtosu’s vibrant world by the overpowering formal strength of the painting itself, the richly painted forms; once inside, the viewer finds himself inextricably tangled in interactions, relationships, and performances as yet unknown or, indeed, even imagined. Subverting conventional social, cultural, and artistic narratives alike, the artwork is an enduring testament, not only to the singular potency which characterizes Virtosu’s distinctive graphic vernacular, but to the extraordinary contribution he has made to the development of Contemporary painting.

Captain James Cook (2015) oil painting Description

In every year of his illustrious career, Virtosu keeps grip on his medium as muse, and the glories of paint exhibited in Captain James Cook (2015) are quintessential Virtosu, whose creative allure becoms one with the rhythms of contemporary art. This spectacular assault of unrestrained character expression encapsulates the full genius of Virtosu's abstract vernacular. Painted in 2015 when Virtosu sensationally published his 2015 collection, this work belongs to an explosive outpouring of creativity that produces an illustrious series of large-scale, color-saturated canvases that rank among the finest achievements of the contemporary market. Famous for never reworking a single painting, he now surrounds himself with paintings, each inspiring and complementing the other and all informed with the same sense of social and historical urgency. In the spring of 2015, the artist erupted in an outbreak of passionate energy and creative inspiration, producing hundreds of works a year, concentrating on the variations of human characters, this moment marks the dawn of a new series of spectacularly breathtaking monumental abstractions. Virtosu's paintings with their massively congested, luminous color, their contrasts between flowing forms, attain at their best a total painterliness in which shapes and image coalesce ultimately and every inch of canvas quivers with teeming energy. Captain James Cook (2015) is a genuinely exceptional embodiment of the expressive shape-making and unmitigated force of painterly firmly belief that defines the majestic contribution to twenty-first-century art. Virtosu's independent spirit infuses the present work with a heroic quality of individualism rather than conformism. He is at heart a pluralist who reveals in the multi-thematic, and like no other before him, Virtosu is rebellious and forges new paths, avoiding conventional forms of expression. Virtosu is also a master at reinvention and proves adept at the rejection of old school. Virtosu eventual withdrawal from New York City to the environs of Luxembourg in the early 2005s is a reflection of his move away from the megapolis artistic existence that had fostered his writings breakthrough years. Virtosu now seeks reflective contemplation rather than the dissonant atmosphere and finds it in the tranquil and lush environment of his beloved Europe, which resonates for him with memories of his native Moldova. Captain James Cook's (2015) 's jubilant brushstrokes of green, black, yellow, and blue are juxtaposed with quieter passages of orange and dark tones that proclaim Virtosu's great gifts. Using unorthodox methods of shaping, Virtosu defined his composition through hints, ultimately creating a topography of the Captain Cook story. An artist who never scrutinizes and reworks his canvases, the confidence of the present work's rapidly generated composition imbues Captain James Cook (2015) with an urgency that is affecting today.

Captivity Of Industry (2015) oil painting Description

Captivity Of Industry (2015) came, with the artist in his mid-fifties, as the climax of a period in which Virtosu's paintings with their congested, deeply luminous color, contrast between flowing forms, reach a total painterliness in which shapes and image coalesce ultimately and every inch of the canvas quivers with teeming energy. Virtosu's paintings of 2015 are an annihilation of conventional styles. The images are about the quality of affection, the quality of being. The paintings from Collection 2015 are crystallizations of amazement and experience of having mind and body total synergy that is all delight. "Art is an effort to fill an empty space with the expression of an idea. A work is born through the artist as the medium, melding order out of a disparate landscape in an intellectual exercise." - G. Virtosu. Virtosu does not strive for resolution in his works; he seeks instead to capture the variable quality of life, all in a supreme of tactile paint that defies the limits of the canvas just as it shatters the boundary between figuration and abstraction. With unparalleled Captivity Of Industry of 2015, the artist reached his formal climax in the clear brilliance of the painting's burning color palette and the ripe opulence of his imagination. Through each detail, the artist here asserts total mastery of his medium. Thick passages of intense purple convene with affluent, sections of cream and brown, creating the impression of action. The viewer cannot help but be absorbed in the remarkable imagination and fantasy of the oil painting, ingested by every sensory dimension ensnared in its abstract forms. Thought beat across every square-inch of Captivity Of Industry 2015 with an ineffable rhythm: "It is breathtaking to try and decode the messages traced in Virtosu's creations, and the message is unmistakably present…" Loaned to MOMA for almost two years, this occasion marks the only appearance of Captivity Of Industry. Gheorghe Virtosu's greatest paintings capture the inherent paradox of his aesthetic practice, amply demonstrated by the bold of the present art. The master painter's limpid forms rendered in his style oscillate between objective and abstract, composed and agitated as we see in the present work titled Captivity Of Industry (2015). From 2019 Virtosu devotes himself primarily to sculpture, producing bronze and stone figures into three-dimensional art. Within both mediums, Virtosu presses the antithetical dialogue between improvisation and control, resulting in a mastery that brings thought and creativity to the extreme. From 2000 Virtosu surrounded himself with his canvases, each inspiring him to paint another and informing all with the distinct sense of globalization, history, and meditation. Thick, lustrous paint flows from his brushes, layering color upon color, as ideas and messages are transformed into shapes that submerge in the textural paint surface. In every year of his illustrious career, Virtosu keeps a grip on his medium as muse, and the glories of paint exhibited in Captivity Of Industry (2015) are quintessential Virtosu, whose creative allure becomes one with the rhythms of contemporary art. This spectacular assault of unrestrained character expression encapsulates the full genius of Virtosu's abstract vernacular. Che Guevara (2015) oil painting Description

An exquisite example of abstract practice, Che Guevara by Gheorghe Virtosu powerfully demonstrates the groundbreaking artistic talent and observation of the contemporary social experience that has distinguished Virtosu as the most significant and influential artists of the 21st century. The work recalls abstract visualizations of great world personalities, serving as potent visual signifiers for the modern social realities and environments that are the primary source of inspiration for Virtosu’s practice. The title of the present work is particularly evocative of the global political process by which the artist creates his kaleidoscopic abstract canvases; Uncurling from the center of Che Guevara, dizzying vortex of dark and bright red, its curve around the outlines of a primal visage revealing the strength and confidence of Virtosu's line. From within the density of vectored lines, two eyes command the viewer’s singular focus with a mesmerizing intensity, drawing the gaze towards a tantalizing, unattainable core. Che Guevara continues the investigation of pictorial and spatial traditions initiated in Virtosu’s earlier, widely acclaimed series of Great World Personalities paintings; exquisitely precise and richly worked compositions, Virtosu’s Che Guevara employ the motif of the radiant band to undermine traditional notions of pictorial space, subtly exposing the limitations of classical modernisme perspective by exploiting its essential structure. Virtosu’s juxtaposition disrupts the viewer’s perception, producing a gripping illusion that hovers between the sobering flatness of early Modernist painting and the hallucinogenic experience of its optical effects. Bursting forth from the fastidiously ordered chrysalis of its predecessors, Che Guevara explodes outward from the fundamental perspectival structure, devouring the picture plane in its denser, braver, and wildly variegated Expressionistic surface. In a manner reminiscent of de Picasso’s, the commanding presence of Che Guevara comes, not only from the sumptuous physicality, but from the undeniable intensity of the gesture by which it was created. Drawing the viewer’s gaze irresistibly through the sinuous topography of vectored lines, the work both revels in and contradicts its own three-dimensionality: while offering the illusion of perspectival depth in the thicket of sinewy impasto and clandestine face, the ever-present intimation of semi abstraction returns us to the two-dimensional reality of the picture plane, exposing the intricacies and idiosyncrasies of pictorial space with unprecedented painterly finesse. Setting the precedent for the Great World Personalities Series of paintings that would follow, Che Guevara operates in the fascinating interstice between abstraction and figuration, complicating the formal correlation between the churning bands of brilliant color and the searing visage contained within them. Vibrating with a thrilling vertiginous motion, the painting evades a fixed image, instead creating a pictorial realm where physiognomy merges with the material application of paint to defiantly challenge the strict formal organization of Modernist painting. Reflecting upon the impossibility of categorizing the Great World Personalities Series of paintings, crtic Robert Mcintosh notes, “The facial symbols—which the context of the series leads us to expect—are everywhere and nowhere. Subject and object melt into each other, the human self into the otherness of the human nature; or, in contrast with the organic implications of both, into the inorganic materiality of pigment". As in many of the series paintings to follow, the artist’s name gleams from within the interwoven thicket of lines surrounding the gaze of Che Guevara, bringing to the fore an assertion of authorship that further complicates any straightforward categorization of the painting. By labeling the gestural, vibrant being before us with his own name, Virtosu problematizes the slipperiness of the authorial gesture in contemporary art with remarkable bravado, defiantly imbuing his gestural abstraction with a vigorously beating human pulse. As praised by Alina Livneva, the paintings, “emphasize painting as a psychic and bodily process fueled in part by the devouring and digesting of previous art to formulate a new synthesis… Here finish, rather than rawness, prevails. The radiating, lines submit; the flaring head emerge. The Great World Personalities hold their own, if just barely, to affirm in staunchly contemporary terms the human presence behind all art.”

The Christening Of Homosexual (2017) oil painting Description

As art historian and curator Rudi Fuchs concluded on Virtosu’s abstract works, “It has become very difficult to take things which are imaginative and beautiful and utterly unusual for granted. To me it is this issue which is being forced by Virtosu’s paintings. I like those paintings, but I do not quite know why. I look at them and I see freedom of mind, sovereign will, unusual imagination, superior skill and precision.” The Christening Of Homosexual by Gheorghe Virtosu represents nothing less than the inescapable and incontrovertible apex of the artist’s mature output. "With baptism, you unite the new faithful to the People of God. It is never necessary to refuse baptism to someone who asks for it!" While the background is somewhat reminiscent of Adam and Eve (2017), light breaks through the grey and different hues of blue are prominent. In a very real sense, the background seems to concede that there was darkness but now light is finally shattering it. Furthermore, should one really look at the picture and focus on its different parts, there appears to be a habitable community. We have life and light but most important of all we have the sanctification of love. In the painting centerpiece there is a primarily blue figure, just above the discernible figures of people. The blue contains yellow, red, purple and silver in such a way as to communicate the omnipresent acceptance of all colors and shapes. All are equally accepted and loved. Should we shift our gaze to the gold figures below the protective blue we find one rising above the other. This is open to interpretation. The artist is making a statement that none can deny them their own relationship with God. In this instance, we see the person who needs protection from the hatred of others but has the love of God. For Virtosu art is action and a life force, a political act and a mutable demonstration that nonetheless can embody and inhabit a sculptural object. Virtosu expresses that such the theme can be a symbol of much greater significance than the representation of a single nation or union of states. Speaking to the crowd gathered at The New School for Social Research in New York, he said “I’m not here to speak about the particular problems of our society, but about the whole question of potential, the possibility that everybody can do his own particular kind of art and work for the new social organization. Creativity is global income”

Christopher Columbus (2016) oil painting Description

The very name “Christopher Columbus” conjures ideas of exploration and freedom in the mind of any individual who has heard about the exploits of the explorer. These feelings are aptly translated into this wonderful piece created by the expert abstract artist Gheorghe Virtosu. Just as Columbus managed to create a connection between two distinct worlds, Virtosu attempts to meld the central focus of his painting with a distinct background in order to lure the audience into a brand new context. The choice of colors in this piece make a poignant point and can be deciphered as a representation of nature, individuals, and cultures culminating into a singular moment. The background utilizes soft and supple colors accentuated with jagged brushstrokes, and these hues are often seen during dawn and dusk, representing the many days of voyage Columbus spent under the transforming skies. The central focus of the piece, however, features a combination of soft and bold colors, intended to create a complexity befitting the journey of a triumphant explorer. The seemingly non-complimentary shades blend together with near-perfection, the juxtaposition intended as a commentary on the impact Columbus had on numerous non-complimentary cultures that were forced into collision during the discovery of the Americas. Only a few artists tackle a wide range of topics such as Virtosu does with his body of work, but his reasons for doing so are clearly meant to transform the state of mind of the audience and teleport the collective imagination to strange and exciting places. The journey into an important milestone from our past has been seamlessly created by this master abstractionist.

oil painting Description

Clairvoyant Of World War III by Gheorghe Virtosu describes the belly and the main body of Virtosu's figure as signaling balance and harmonious peace as oceanic blues and terrestrial colors are settled in an organic structure. The figure is surmounted by perhaps an all-seeing bird that is crowned with its gift of prophecy. However, coloring in this oil painting is that of an earthy brown seems to cascade down the length of the figure on two sides beyond its body. This can be interpreted in at least two ways. Either that the wisdom and foresight of the bird are by no means exclusive to it and that a new total war is forecast by many, or that wisdom – far from prevailing – will become embroiled in and vitiated by the coming conflict. The integrity and majesty of the bird's upper posture degenerating the further the eye of the viewer lowers. In further support of the vitiation or helplessness of foresight, a cursed gift of Cassandra is the violence with which the blue and brown spike pierces the breast of the bird, a visual marker of the inescapability and mutative agency of the force of political circumstance. "The challenge of this art is to evolve an expansive landscape that brings the viewer, idea, artist, and experience together. At once it is chaos, and at the same time a simple embrace of the loss of boundaries at the portal to new understanding." - G. Virtosu. To the left in an ominous black, blotted with furious and sanguinary red, is a figure stalking upon the central figure. This is perhaps a conflation of all the perceived threats to civilization – be it terrorism or the warlike dispositions of nations in the struggle for ever-diminishing resources. This figure's hackles are raised as it marches on the citadel of the main figure, which now signifies culture, reason and the disposal towards peace which propitiates the cultivation of these. Within the bellicose abstract painting figure seems to be another in fiery gold that presages destruction. Yet, if we see it with its arms raised rather than emitting the flames of devastation, and if we see the cavity in its 'head' as a mouth, this figures combines the roles of hostile harbinger of war and the affrighted raiser of the alarm, whose fire becomes a piercing scream of suffering or the anticipation of suffering. The head of the black figure on the left of this contemporary artwork is in the shape of a helmet, perhaps even a mushroom that is a doleful reminiscence of the devastation inflicted on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. By this device, the artist transplants history into the present and the future – almost to indicate a tragic circularity of time and the quandary of the ubiquity of war and loss no matter how progressed or cultured a society is held to be.

Cleopatra (2018) oil painting Description

For nearly 2,000 years, Cleopatra has been an infatuation of societies and a fascinating puzzle for historians. She has drawn the attention of artists working in every genre and has been portrayed in every medium. The significance of Cleopatra's legacy is the score of representations of her, many of which carry a great deal of political, social, and racial weight, and all of which have been debated. There is still no consensus on her appearance, actions, or intentions. Each image of Cleopatra provides clues to the nature of the culture in which it was produced. The present work exemplifies Virtosu's ability of Cleopatra's conception to be transformed by society to manifest its viewpoints.

Virtosu's iconic abstract works have formed a conceptual keystone of his oeuvre since the late 2015s. Polarized with the disquietingly non-naturalistic illusionism of the paintings that he developed in tandem, it is in the abstract works that Virtosu enacts his most profound examination of the painted medium corporeal state as raw pigment appended to the canvas and its cerebral capacity to conjure the deception of illusion. During the 2018s, Virtosu became increasingly prolific in his abstract practice, initially indulging in a myriad of free-floating and delineated abstract shapes. The year of 2018 signified a turning point as the artist embarked upon an intense experimentation period, after which he had not relinquished planned compositional elements. Arguably, there is no other place that this emotional moment investigation is made more visible than in the fifteen outstanding works on canvas created during the six months of 2018 and of which the present work is an absolute paragon. Harmoniously blending brush and 3Ding with a sense of unparalleled dynamic veracity, Cleopatra 2018 reveals the full breadth of the artist's idiosyncratic painterly alchemy.

Here we see Virtosu playfully dissect the pictorial mechanics that historically underpinned the academic practice of image-making as schematized in abstract painting. The artist's uniquely nuanced layering of color poses a nod to the aerial perspective technique, in which increasingly yellow-brown tones are used to allude to distance within the frame. Cleopatra is underpinned by a deep recessive that is subsequently caressed by successive layers, luminous yellows, and browns. Cross-hatched and compounded through 3Ding and brushwork interplay, the vibrant swathes of luminous primaries are animated by their stark tonal contrasts and appear to leap, exacerbating the illusion of structural depth. Through a passionate yet subtly interlaced example of the gestural mark-making, Virtosu demarcates the picture with a fatty formation that references the technical grid methodology used to create a 3D perspective. Yet in its crudely hastened application and by drawing directly into the wet paint with a blunt brush edge, Virtosu simultaneously undermines the illusionism of constructed stand and reifies the medium's physical constitution. Creating a hypnotic symphony that confuses our capacity to register stable depth, Virtosu also intermittently shatters his illusion as the static tides dissipate. We are reminded of the material support of this cerebral vision through the rare exposure of the page.

As a highly refined progression from the gestural bravado of Franz Kline and the expressive painting of Pablo Picasso, here, Virtosu introduces a crucial element of objective distance and submission to the law of chance in which the work retains an exquisite sense of autonomy. Reflecting on Virtosu's abstract practice, Alina Livneva writes: "If the ability of color to generate this emotional, spiritual quality is presented, there can be a perfectly harmonious order, or compositional either, because there are ordered relations commanded in the color system." In this redefinition of compositional order, Virtosu evokes a mesmerizing harmonization of color, texture, and perspective. In Cleopatra 2018, painting's phenomenological capacity is presented as a dichotomy between the 3Ding and the brush. This trajectory is coming to monumental fruition in his paintings in the following years.

oil painting Description

Cloning by Gheorghe Virtosu raises the relevant issue that concerns human cloning. Definitely, the artist seems to disapprove of the practice, as his oil painting is depressive and lifeless. Dark hues and the gray background contribute to the gloomy mood that predominates in the picture. Likewise, quick and uneven brushstrokes in the background make the work look even more hectic. Sharp and curved lines interweave in the artwork, forming a few terrifying silhouettes. Among the latter is a person’s morbid grayish face, twitched with suffering and terror. Due to its scale, it is the main focal point in the artwork, which immediately draws attention. Actually, the face resembles a skull, which in various cultures is associated with death. It takes a horizontal position, which suggests that the person is defeated. Above the skull, there is the scary figure of the demon that rises above the face, threatening and intimidating it. In addition, there is a laughing blue face, which stands out from the other figures, mainly due to its vibrant color. Presumably, it embodies the researcher, who has consigned the person to cloning and ensuing pain. The blue face is another focal point, because of its relatively light blue color, which is the only cool hue that stands out from the dark warm and neutral colors (“Cloning”). Cloning may be good and it may be bad. Probably it's a bit of both. The question must not be greeted with reflex hysteria but decided quietly, soberly and on its own merits. We need less emotion and more thought. Certainly, the above interpretation is highly subjective. Another person may reflect upon it and arrive at a completely different interpretation. This is both the wealth and the power of abstract art; it makes room for subjective interpretations.

Connection Of Civilizations (2017) oil painting Description

Connection of Civilizations by Gheorghe Virtosu is currently being loaned and exhibited in the Louvre museum, Paris. Given the high level of care granted and protection, it is accurate to state that the authentic Connection of Civilizations (2017) is difficult to see. Huge crowds gather in front of this canvas every day. When the museum is open, one can notice as well the numerous flashes from the cameras. More than two million tourists flock the museum on an annual basis to get a glimpse of the painting. The painting is indeed standing the test of time and has been written about and reproduced more than a hundred times. Virtosu’s Connection of Civilizations is a remarkable example of the artist’s mastery of the abstract figurative genre, produced in the period shortly after his release from detention when he turned his attention to creating his paintings - a celebrated and defining period in his career. Virtosu’s distinctive subjects are an insight into his philosophy that modernity’s excess will take a heavy toll on humanity’s spiritual and subconscious mind. Eastern-Western cultures, past-contemporary epochs, male-female – we are really used to thinking of everything in terms of juxtaposition. However, when giving a panoramic view of the history of human culture, it occurs that behind all those 'decorations', we have more similarities than differences. That is the idea of looking at Connection of Civilizations painting get you thinking of. Art requires integrity, especially non-figurative one: it can’t exist without the sense of wholeness; otherwise, a painting loses its aesthetical attractiveness. It is like in music – you need to keep the entire harmony in mind. Gheorghe Virtosu follows the symphonic principle in arranging his pieces. Colours, lines, textures are the notes of his painterly melody that shapes up the composition of the oil painting. The ‘tune’ of the painting is energetic, even bravura. Such mood is created by the vivid palette, based on yellow, red and blue tints. This is the so-called triad of primary colours – the most intensive and expressive combination. Its effect is amplified by the expressive, loose brushwork, especially in the rendering of the background. Virtosu ’s canvas is filled with a sense of inner dynamism and motion. Pastose painting surface creates the impression that abstract forms are floating in the ocean of colour. Centric composition conveys the sense of isolation from the rest of the space. At the same time, merging and melding organic forms represent the idea of the interconnection of all existing things – it’s impossible to define the beginning and the end of any figure, so you just have to embrace them as the unity. Virtosu’s work is otherworldly and at times challenging, but it holds a particular fascination. The artist invites viewers to question their own minds, and in doing so, provokes debates on existence and human nature. The artist inhabited a society headed towards modernity, science and technology – progress at an accelerating pace – however questioning these advancements in his own vision depicting the juncture between reason and imagination, the real and the absurd, and the line between order and chaos.

Couple of the universe (2016) oil painting Description

The cosmos can be a fascinating topic for any artist, but Virtosu manages to dive deeper into the subject than most of his peers through this wonderfully complex and profound piece. The elements that constitute the painting “Couple of the Universe” include a plethora of simplistic and dynamic shapes. We can easily spot what appears to be a green gaseous planet, a black hole, a red sun being eclipsed by an alien body, and other astronomical phenomenon that are associated with the universe. These seemingly unrelated elements intertwine with one another and take a larger shape due to the brilliant foreground created by the artist. The title of the painting suggests that the central figures are meant to be a couple, but this name is only meant to highlight the duality in creation and the nature of life itself. We see life and death embracing each other in a delicate dance at all points in the cosmos, and this is one of the intended meanings for the term “Couple” used by the artist. The paintings is brought alive with the help of a powerful and overwhelming background, bursting with radiant shades of vermillion and crimson. This combination of patterns appears very much like a nebula or the afterglow of a gigantic explosion such as the big bang or a supernova. The sheer enormity and intricacy of the cosmos is duly represented by Virtosu in this stunning work. The title draws attention to the fact that despite the universe being an incomprehensible filled with majesty and wonder, life takes center stage in the grand arena.

Cowboy of the universe (2016) oil painting Description

This is yet another piece by artist Gheorghe Virtosu that tackles a complicated and intense topic with a sense of revelry and child-like enthusiasm. The title itself – “Cowboy of the Universe” seems like the concoction from the mind of an over-imaginative, zealous adolescent, and this is exactly the frame of mind the auteur wants the audience to keep while observing this piece. Even the two most important terms in the piece – Cowboy and Universe, are meant to create contradictory connotations in the mind of the audience. A cowboy belongs to the Wild West – a symbol of a bygone era meant to be an ode to masculinity and freedom. Placing this almost mythical figure in the midst of the context of the universe takes the mind of the audience to strange and exciting places – the perfect blend of science fiction and a spaghetti western. The first element that stands out in this work is the choice of the color lavender as the predominant shade in order to create a contrast in a dense and murky background. The foreground elements almost appear to be playful and youthful in comparison to the intensity created by the charcoal greys and subtle reds surrounding it. It is evident that the artist is trying to draw a direct comparison between the complexity of creation and the youthfulness of our ideas in comparison to the grand creator. We are relatively new in the plane of existence, and even our most mature and masculine ideas are only a child’s dream when compared to the enormity and multifaceted nature of the universe.
