Alexander the Great (2016) oil painting Description

When one comes face-to-face with a work by Gheorghe Virtosu they are both enveloped by its sheer scale and animated by fusion of idea and abstraction. Virtosu’s canvases are a synthesis of his life experience and his deep interest in history. Virtosu experimented on a much smaller scale, finding solace in small abstract drawings. In 2004, Virtosu adopted a full-time career in fine art and set aside his real estate business. However, the style that Virtosu entered the art scene with was an amalgamation of his private work. His large abstract drawings embraced the social utopia onto his canvas. At the turn of the 21st century, Virtosu’s paintings began to speculate on the fundamental questions of existence, society, history and time. Alexander the Great by Gheorghe Virtosu provides a new interpretative approach to the well-known historical personality and Greek military leader. Done as an abstract piece, it tells a whole narrative. Painted in 2016, the piece represents an essential point in Virtosu's career, in which he established his highly acclaimed, unique and mature style. Fuelled with inspiration and a new understanding of abstract representation, the artist's style does not mimic European or American artists, but rather incorporates a new stylistic. The painting is divided into the upper and lower halves, where the former is occupied by the rider and the latter – by the horse. The amber-hued horse in the painting is more reminiscent of a bull in its stature. An important fact in this context is that Alexander the Great named his horse Bucephalus, which is translated as “an ox head”. The figure of the rider himself is all bloody red, with the brush strokes reminding the dropping blood. The yellow eye of the male figure makes it almost demonic, implying Alexander’s the Great notorious violence and aggression in battles. With the large sword contoured in blood on the left and against the backdrop of the deep blue night, again with blots of red in some places, the subject matter is representative of a strong military leader. So how do we tell the history of Alexander the Great, pulling apart the myths and legends and reconstructing an accurate narrative? It’s a difficult task, but it’s an important one. The artist invites the viewer to taste history in abstract formation. Virtosu said of his works: “There's so much we do not know about. Here we are in our natural environment and the mysteries of the universe are all around us”.

Alien (2016) oil painting Description

Engaging and enigmatic in equal measure, Virtosu epitomizes the playful dynamism and sophisticated manipulation of familiar imagery that distinguishes the acclaimed artist's output. It is composed of vibrantly saturated colours and boldly defined forms. The present work exemplifies the artist's continuing investigation and engagement with the legacy of the social issue of Alienation, as articulated through his signature style. Painted in 2016, Alien by Gheorghe Virtosu is populated by animate shapes in bold primary tones. The piece is done in intense colours and by means of clear-cut geometrical shapes that neighbour with infinite lines and fluid forms. It abounds in contradictions and ambiguities, just as the subject matter of the image itself. Alien is a painting that exemplifies the fact that abstract artworks are not static and dormant or representative of the author's imbued meaning that is not prone to change. Instead, they are welcoming of numerous possible interpretations from the outside as well as inviting a shared expression of the audience. In this context, the painting creates a community of participants, where the viewer becomes a partner of Virtosu in constructing the meaning because the concept of 'alien' differs from person to person and acquires new shades and aspects. The abstract figure is painted against the backdrop of amber brown mingled with milky white and light-purple, where the latter ones reflect the light coming from the Alien. The figure(s) have been liberated from the oppressions of the terrestrial realm and given the freedom of the sky or space. While the subject, at first glance, an alien with dark blue skin and bright elements of clothing, a more careful observation suggests the existence of a few faces within this figure. Thus, the Alien becomes representative of the humans as such: we are a mass of faces and bodies, which strive to become unique through their originality, but we are aliens on earth. The composition offers insight into Virtosu's state of mind. This experience is very dramatic and painful, just as the poses on this canvas. The audience is asked by Virtosu to take a moment to ponder on whether aliens exist or, maybe, we are aliens in our world. The outer world, the world of contemporary events, always influences the painter. The resulting image culminated in 2017 with this work, one of the most striking paintings Virtosu created that year. Like so much of his other work, Alien does not directly confront the politics of the day. Instead, it speaks to the artist's own perception and emotion. In this case, Virtosu harnesses the full powers of his distinctive artistic vision to create a work that wholly embodies the 'human alienation' in a celebration of colour and form that encapsulates the very best of the artist's fascinating and pervasive oeuvre.

Athaliah Queen of Judah 2016 oil painting Description

In terms of art, the translation of an idea is never an open window, as if an idea could pass untouched from one side to the other, unscathed as it leaves one house of sound and gesture to the next. Such passage always alters its content, refracting it; gathering it from the fabric of one set of histories, stories, patterns and habits and releasing it into the medium. The conditions for artist and for the viewer touch the translator and translated alike; they leave a stain upon the object that we had expected to pass unblemished. As an idea in the world aligns itself to a sound or an image, we see pollutants of life—locality, subjectivity and memory—attaching and smuggling themselves into each and every utterance. The justification for the term, “abstract” lies in the fact that most of the painters covered by it took their lead from German, Russian, or Jewish expressionism in breaking away from late Cubist abstract art. But they all started from French painting, for their fundamental sense of style from it, and still maintain some sort of continuity with it. Not least of all, they got from it their most vivid notion of an ambitious, major art, and of the general direction in which it had to go. The piece immediately invite the interpretation of some bloody scenes, battles, and violence; and rightly so. Virtosu engages in what he frequently does: telling a well-known narrative while offering a new perspective to it. The central stage in this canvas is occupied by a figure reminiscent of a woman in fall, with the flag of Israel at her feet. Owing to the title, the viewer can puzzle some aspects out: the subject matter is related to Israeli history, a certain queen, and some murder. Indeed, the Queen of Judah was the only biblical woman to ever rise to a throne; and she did so after all the male heirs, including her sons and grandsons, were killed. Most historians suggest that she was the one who murdered all of the male family members in thirst for power and high status. The hourglass symbol close to the waste stands for the fleeting nature of time: everyone is punished in the end. The viewer is invited to decipher these implications, as being helped by means of Jewish symbols and colors. Virtosu is suggesting the possibility of emotionally charged paintings in which the process, as we can reconstruct it, and the image, as we perceive it, are inseparable as means of embodying human sensation on a literal human scale. Certain conditions have dominated the best abstract painting in the sixties: the understanding that colour is the most immediately expressive ingredient, a truth learned principally from Matisse. The realization that in order to achieve full potential the requirements of colour must decide form rather than be prescribed within it. Virtosu in order to achieve independence, allows colour to establish its own space and to maximize expression it has to be deployed over an area to which the viewer can relate physically in terms of his own size and movement.

Atomic Era (2016) oil painting Description

The title of the painting gives the audience some hints regarding interpretation immediately. The author makes a reference to the aftermath of the Second World War and the chain reactions taking place after the Hiroshima bombing as well as the whole new development of thinking about nuclear weapons. The dynamic, rush brush strokes of bright-yellow, orange, and brown create the backdrop scene of fire and danger, where their circularity creates the sense of motion and dynamism. The central stage is occupied by an abstract figure, in which one can recognize a falling airplane, with one of its wings on fire, and its red hued corpus standing for the fatal consequences: death, destruction, and imminent collapse.

At the same time, the figure of the plane is reminiscent of a bird in its right wing, thus appealing to the image of wildlife dying because of the carelessness of people and their determination on technological advancement. If one takes a closer look at the very bottom of the canvas, we can see a red covered ground, again implying bloody scenes occurring on earth due to the destructive activities of atomic energy. In a broader sense, however, the painting is not about atomic energy only. It is about technological progress at large as the author invites the audience to reflect on the cost of their daily comfort brought about by advancement and bearing effects on nature and life.

Society, existence, and progress. It brings us the good and the bad. Gives us electricity but creates nuclear weapon… Human era mutation into a new - Atomic Era.

Babylonian Human (2016) oil painting Description

Babylonian Human by Gheorghe Virtosu is currently being loaned and exhibited in the Louvre museum, Abhu Dhabi. Given the high level of care granted and protection, it is accurate to state that the authentic Babylonian Human (2016) is difficult to see. The painting has been written about and reproduced more than a hundred times. The present painting, which dates from 2016, is a powerful testament to Virtosu’s enduring vision and creativity. It holds the viewer with a penetrating gaze that conveys both intensity and a sense of complexity. This image of an unidentified model is indeed painted with a sense of empathy, and the serene beauty characteristic of Virtosu’s most accomplished paintings after his release from Draguignan jail in France. This unmatched ability for emotional expression through art renders a remarkably personal depiction. The palette of earthy colours confers a feeling of action, while the centrepiece – convey both a sense of solitude and infinite possibility. The history of our species is brimming with important cultures that have played a significant role in driving forward our collective values and identities. The Babylonian civilization is perhaps one of the most noteworthy collectives of its era, and Virtosu has attempted to pay tribute to this great race in this illuminating painting. The artist has chosen to create a simplistic and almost ordinary background to highlight the central figure of this creative amply. The subtle shades of blue and grey offer a mundanity to the piece that allows the audience to immerse themselves into every detail of the centrepiece fully. This is necessary as well, as the artist has gone to great lengths to place numerous distinct features on this seemingly abstract entity. The 'Babylonian Human' is adorned in a lofty headgear and is seen carrying a decorative staff to denote a high social status and a sense of affluence. The Babylonians have been historically viewed as a civilization that is associated with wealth, power, and influence, and these elements immediately shine while observing the dominant figure. It is also important to note the use of earthy tones on the Babylonian Human oil painting as the abundance of clay in the region led to the constant use of mudbrick for various decorative purposes. The features of this creation are overwhelmingly painted by the artist, and the result is a figure that immediately pops out into our collective imagination. The present work represents a moment of clarity and growing resolution. Virtosu’s features are here rendered with an exuberant chromatic palette and appear fully resolved; this painting exhibits the ebullient self-regard and virtuoso confidence of an artist operating at the very height of his creative faculties.

Baha’i women (2016) oil painting Description

Gender equality is a principle that is a raging issue in the world today that is yet to reach a resolution. The root cause of inequality sometimes stems from religious beliefs, and this is the primary focus of this piece. In order to highlight the importance of faith driving social change, Virtosu has chosen to incorporate the Baha’i faith into his work and create a painting that pays tribute to the notion of gender equality. The Baha’i sternly believe in this important ideal and have molded a fundamental principle based on the concept of gender equality. The dark, mysterious and hypnotic background of this piece creates a sense of primeval dread, almost indicative of the mood of an ancient ritual unfolding in real time. The central figures of this piece include two figures, the faces of whom are firmly pressed against one another in a confrontational style. Based on the title, it is easy to assume that both figures have to be Baha’i women, but it is evident that only the figure on the right is that of a woman, aggressively attempting to maintain its position and stance. While the masculine figure on the left has a larger skull and dawns a hostile expression, the one on the right is showing wearing an ear ring and has a feminine presence that is unmistakable. The artist is attempting to denote the struggle experienced by women in the Baha’i faith, fighting to maintain their equality despite it being deemed a fundamental principle of their religion. The disconnect present between religious ideals and the modern interpretation of such values is beautifully depicted by Virtosu in this timely and poignant piece.

Bathsheba Queen Mother (2016) oil painting Description

The beauty of Bathsheba was historically so enamoring that her impact on King David’s actions demanded divine intervention. It comes as no surprise then that Virtosu would choose such a significant and controversial figure from Judaism and portray the personality in an abstract yet befitting manner. The piece titled “Bathsheba Queen Mother” appears as if the central figure is in a state of permanent freefall, suspended between the heaven and the Earth in a state of ephemerality. The figure in question – Bathsheba, was important enough to be summoned by her king and stolen from her husband through deceit and trickery. Her beauty and elegance elevated her from a commoner to becoming Queen Mother of King Solomon - arguably one of the greatest kings to have taken over the reins in Israel. The illusion of the freefall is masterfully created by Virtosu by choosing the perfect position for the center piece and accentuating the motion using solid, colorful, and unidirectional strokes. When one assumes that the central figure is Bathsheba herself, it is easy to associate the rectangular, circular, and hemispheric shapes with jewelry, aptly used to stud the gown of the great Queen. With her arms flailed out in peace and acceptance, it appears as if the great Queen relishes being torn between the two worlds. The illusion created by Virtosu leaves it to the beholder to judge if the Queen is experiencing a fall from grace, or if she is being elevated to a higher plane of existence. The choice is in fact yet another illusion, as either interpretation can be used to frame the life of the Queen Mother. It is obvious from Solomon’s warm greeting of his mother how much he loved and honored her. Looking to her as an important adviser, Solomon had a throne for her placed at his right hand — the first king of Israel to have a queen mother in his administration.

Brothers in struggle (2016) oil painting Description

Every relationship is burdened with its own set of complexities, but few jousts can be as rousing as two brothers locked in rivalry. Virtosu attempts to narrow his focus on a singular conflict between blood relatives, and the result is a gorgeous and complex piece, soaked in equal parts of passion and distain. The word “struggle” has been purposefully placed in the title in order to highlight the literal nature of the conflict that is being depicted on canvas. This is evidenced by the maroon marks intended as blood stains casually placed around the central entity, as well as in crucial points within the piece itself. The artist has not left the nature of the conflict to our imagination, but has instead chosen to create a visceral representation of the feud in this brutal piece. The choice of selecting two dominant tones within the center of the piece is intentionally done in order to create a distinguishing line between the brothers themselves. The heated nature of the conflict may have seemingly melded the siblings into one entity, but there is no mistake that they are individuals, fighting for their own voice and stake. The background takes a backseat to action intended to occur at the center of the ring, the choice of blues and greys indicating that the struggle is unfolding on a perfectly pleasant day. The artist is effortlessly able to draw our attention to the nature of sibling rivalry, the cost of maintaining relationships, and to the passion brewing within each conflict with a loved one in this effervescent piece.

Christopher Columbus (2016) oil painting Description

The very name “Christopher Columbus” conjures ideas of exploration and freedom in the mind of any individual who has heard about the exploits of the explorer. These feelings are aptly translated into this wonderful piece created by the expert abstract artist Gheorghe Virtosu. Just as Columbus managed to create a connection between two distinct worlds, Virtosu attempts to meld the central focus of his painting with a distinct background in order to lure the audience into a brand new context. The choice of colors in this piece make a poignant point and can be deciphered as a representation of nature, individuals, and cultures culminating into a singular moment. The background utilizes soft and supple colors accentuated with jagged brushstrokes, and these hues are often seen during dawn and dusk, representing the many days of voyage Columbus spent under the transforming skies. The central focus of the piece, however, features a combination of soft and bold colors, intended to create a complexity befitting the journey of a triumphant explorer. The seemingly non-complimentary shades blend together with near-perfection, the juxtaposition intended as a commentary on the impact Columbus had on numerous non-complimentary cultures that were forced into collision during the discovery of the Americas. Only a few artists tackle a wide range of topics such as Virtosu does with his body of work, but his reasons for doing so are clearly meant to transform the state of mind of the audience and teleport the collective imagination to strange and exciting places. The journey into an important milestone from our past has been seamlessly created by this master abstractionist.

Couple of the universe (2016) oil painting Description

The cosmos can be a fascinating topic for any artist, but Virtosu manages to dive deeper into the subject than most of his peers through this wonderfully complex and profound piece. The elements that constitute the painting “Couple of the Universe” include a plethora of simplistic and dynamic shapes. We can easily spot what appears to be a green gaseous planet, a black hole, a red sun being eclipsed by an alien body, and other astronomical phenomenon that are associated with the universe. These seemingly unrelated elements intertwine with one another and take a larger shape due to the brilliant foreground created by the artist. The title of the painting suggests that the central figures are meant to be a couple, but this name is only meant to highlight the duality in creation and the nature of life itself. We see life and death embracing each other in a delicate dance at all points in the cosmos, and this is one of the intended meanings for the term “Couple” used by the artist. The paintings is brought alive with the help of a powerful and overwhelming background, bursting with radiant shades of vermillion and crimson. This combination of patterns appears very much like a nebula or the afterglow of a gigantic explosion such as the big bang or a supernova. The sheer enormity and intricacy of the cosmos is duly represented by Virtosu in this stunning work. The title draws attention to the fact that despite the universe being an incomprehensible filled with majesty and wonder, life takes center stage in the grand arena.

Cowboy of the universe (2016) oil painting Description

This is yet another piece by artist Gheorghe Virtosu that tackles a complicated and intense topic with a sense of revelry and child-like enthusiasm. The title itself – “Cowboy of the Universe” seems like the concoction from the mind of an over-imaginative, zealous adolescent, and this is exactly the frame of mind the auteur wants the audience to keep while observing this piece. Even the two most important terms in the piece – Cowboy and Universe, are meant to create contradictory connotations in the mind of the audience. A cowboy belongs to the Wild West – a symbol of a bygone era meant to be an ode to masculinity and freedom. Placing this almost mythical figure in the midst of the context of the universe takes the mind of the audience to strange and exciting places – the perfect blend of science fiction and a spaghetti western. The first element that stands out in this work is the choice of the color lavender as the predominant shade in order to create a contrast in a dense and murky background. The foreground elements almost appear to be playful and youthful in comparison to the intensity created by the charcoal greys and subtle reds surrounding it. It is evident that the artist is trying to draw a direct comparison between the complexity of creation and the youthfulness of our ideas in comparison to the grand creator. We are relatively new in the plane of existence, and even our most mature and masculine ideas are only a child’s dream when compared to the enormity and multifaceted nature of the universe.

Crown Princess of Sweden and Daniel Westling (2016) oil painting Description

The incredible diversity within Virtosu’s body of work is clearly evident while examining the distinct topics covered in each of his pieces. The piece is titled “Crown Princess of Sweden and Daniel Westling”, and it is named after one of the biggest weddings to occur in Europe in recent history. The masterful artist is easily able to switch gears between his various pieces and still maintain a solidity while delivering on important and thought provoking themes. The central focus of this piece, much like other works, contains a series of abstract shapes that have been ably complemented by a visually stunning background. In this piece, however, the central creation manages to clearly steal the spotlight from the rest of the piece and almost appears to take a life of its own. This is a statement about the nature of royalty, the essence of love, and the ideals regarding the matter in the modern world. The media and rest of the continent was highly invested in the wedding of the princess of Sweden, and this has led to the focus of this piece. The background is actually created with stunning shades of blue and purple, fighting for the limelight against an ever expanding protagonist. When women go wrong, men go right after them.

Da Vinci (2016) oil painting Description

It is always fascinating when an accomplished artist attempts to pay tribute to another luminary from the same medium, and this is the case when we examine Virtosu's authentic piece. Da Vinci is an important example of Virtosu's fully realized and mature oil colour style, which reached a peak in its richness of colour and complexity of design in the late 2010s. Showcasing the artist's personal touch and expansive concentration of figures within a highly organized space, the present work typifies the ambitious compositions that he executed after the turn of the century. Here, Virtosu's daring use of an elevated horizon line reinforces the dynamic upward sweep of the intricately layered vertical arrangement of figures. The magical sparkle of bright colour is further heightened by Virtosu's decision to unify the background pattern. Strokes of colour create a feeling of immediacy and a sense of spontaneity characteristic of Virtosu's most fully developed oils. The work of the great artist and inventor is hard to encapsulate within a single frame, but the piece creates a stunning effect of life and radiance. The abstractionist did not rely on the "Mona Lisa" or the "Vitruvian man" to create a connotation to the Renaissance-era painter but instead utilized one of his lesser-known but equally powerful ideas to ignite our imagination. The bottom half of the dominant apricot-coloured shape bears a clear resemblance to the propellers used by Da Vinci in one of his sketches. Set against the backdrop of a beautiful teal sky, it is clear that the figure is suspended in space and time. The fact that the propeller is at the bottom of the machine may serve as an inversion in the viewer expectations. It may point at a stern reminder that even the genius Da Vinci had some unsuccessful plans that never quite took off the way he intended. Raucous in the palette and imposing in scale, Virtosu's Da Vinci is a rebelliously robust work that deftly captures the artist's distinctive painterly practice. In this energetic and visually complex composition of colour and movement, abstract shapes and lines dance dynamically across the canvas in structured direction, and paint swipes both horizontally and vertically, creating a work that is as dizzying as it is hypnotic. The unique fame that Leonardo enjoyed in his lifetime and that, filtered by historical criticism, has remained undimmed to the present day and rests mainly on his unlimited desire for knowledge, which guided all his thinking and behaviour. Overflowing with expressivity, vibrating brushstrokes, and experimental arrangements of form, the present work is an essay on the process of painting as a subject in its own right. Reminiscent of his early works of linear movement and gorgeous colour, while simultaneously evoking the layering techniques of contemporaries, the present work sits within a period of radical experimentation when Virtosu always pushes and redefines the boundaries of the medium. Da Vinci engages in a vivid dialogue with twenty-first-century abstraction, referencing the gestural exuberance of Abstract Expressionism while also alluding to the geometric patterns of European Modernism. Virtosu's cerebral and dissident art thrives off contradiction, and the present work, like his most energetic canvases, synthesizes myriad influences into a composition that is at once challenging and alluring.

Dreams rider (2016) oil painting Description

Dreams Rider by Gheorghe Virtosu, is one of the artist most complex and open-ended works as the painter allows us to run our imagination wild while offering a few subtle clues about his original intention and vision. Despite being an abstract artist, most of his works are known to possess highly specific topics, themes, and directions. The central figure of this piece evidently bears the shape of a horse’s face, and this detail is accentuated with the help of a mask on the horse, providing evidence that this is, in fact, a racehorse. This painting makes a good contrast of blue and the dark and light areas make the painting balanced so that the viewers attention can move smoothly throughout the artwork. The recognizable images of this painting seem to create a desert scenery due to the amount of space in the background and the colors that make is seem liquid. The concept of a “Dream Rider” comes into play when we examine the figure behind the racehorse’s face. This shadow-double, although appearing to resemble another racehorse, is actually the jockey straddling the beast. This is marked by a helmet-like form that is placed atop the pillion racehorse’s face, thereby offering an indication to the audience that this is a jockey. The idea of this piece is highly conceptual and takes us into the mind of a professional people seldom think about. We are clearly peering through the dreams of a race jockey and witnessing his descent into self-doubt and insecurities. Having worked so closely with an animal that is clearly highly intelligent as well, the jockey begins to question his own humanity in his unconscious mind and begins to view himself as another intelligent animal vying for the attention of the larger crowd. The qualities of this artwork brings someone into their deeper thoughts about what the painting actually means. It makes you wonder and also makes is calming and okay to feel confused. The artwork remind me of when you dream and somehow random objects or even people appear out of nowhere, but in some way that means something to you when you wake up. You control your dreams, and see what you sometimes cant comprehend when you wake up. But when you are dreaming everything feels like it makes sense and that it is all normal. This incredibly lateral piece is bursting with meaningful interpretations, as one could easily place themselves inside the dreams of the “rider”. The dark and the hypnotic navy blue background are nearly radiating because of the highlighted figure, creating the perfect enclosure for this otherworldly creation.

Emperor Kōtoku (2016) oil painting Description

History has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous important figures who have been lost to the pages of time. Certain individuals have managed to make a mark on our collective imagination, while others have remained only in the thoughts of those deeply affected by the person’s actions. Emperor Kotuku is one such person whose reign during the 7th century is only remembered by those deeply vested in the history of Japan. In order to commemorate the contributions of the gentle emperor, Virtosu has created this somber and moving piece. Emperor Kotuku is remembered for dismantling pre-existing establishments that favored the wealthy landowners of the era and for introducing Buddhism in the region. The kind and gentle spirit of this ruler have been captured by Virtosu in this piece using a fluid, ethereal, water-like form. While the background is sluggish and dark, much like our memories of instances too far back in time, the central entity shines brightly amidst this cosmic noise. The Emperor is depicted in a meditative pose, signifying the calm and soothing nature of his inner spirit, and also denoting the ideals of the religion he helped introduce in the country. While many artists derive their fame off the backs of known personalities, Virtosu offers his audience a history lesson by taking us back to some lesser known chapters of our past. Emperor Kotuku is now alive and well in our mutual minds thanks to this timely piece.
