2000 Camp David Summit (2017) oil painting Description

Talking about history using the language of non-figurative art seems to be almost impossible. History is always specific, whilst abstract painting avoids certainty, appealing not to facts, but emotions. Nevertheless, we are often mistaken, excluding feelings from history. All vicissitudes and achievements of the epochs affect not countries, not some ephemeral societies - it changes lives of people. 2000 Camp David Summit by Gheorghe Virtosu attempts to capture the emotional climate of the event - the mood of the failed expectations, anger, and disappointment. Such ‘mixture’ is expressed in the complex coloring of the backdrop. It is made of dark blue, combined with the strokes of purple, red, orange, yellow, and light blue, which were applied in the coloring of figures as well. Those tints, clear and joyful themselves, evolve into a somber mass oil painting. The notes of conflict are supported with the drawing of the image, where roundish shapes are merged with some elongated, sharp fragments. The composition of 2000 Camp David Summit oil painting is slightly off the balance: being mostly symmetric, it still has the number of ‘holes’ and ‘bulges’ that interrupt its integrity. They recall the images of animal-like creatures from the Mesoamerican painting, where snakes, jaguars, birds are entwined and devour each other in the everlasting fight. The whole visual construction of the oil painting looks like being torn from the inside and is about to burst - the exact feeling of the situation on the Near East. Unfortunately, we still experience it even today, 18 years after the Camp David Summit, when the problem still remains unsolved. "The challenge of this art is to evolve an expansive landscape that brings the viewer, idea, artist, and experience together. At once it is chaos, and at the same time a simple embrace of the loss of boundaries at the portal to new understanding." - G. Virtosu. Throughout history, the vision of art’s role has changed dramatically - from art as the representation of the transcendental side of life to being just an eye-pleaser. But after going through the trauma of two world wars in the 20th century, political art also became seen as an important platform for speaking up social position and discussing the political matters. Drifting away from ‘art for art’s sake,’ contemporary painters regularly refer to the topical subjects, which comes as no surprise, considering the aggressively intensive flow of mass-media content. As George Orwell once said, “In our age, there is no such thing as 'keeping out of politics. All issues are political issues, and politics itself is a mass of lies, evasions, folly, hatred, and schizophrenia.”

Abandoned (2017) oil painting Description

The leitmotifs of Virtosu’s thought have been clearly stated from the very beginning: faith versus skepticism; hope versus pessimism; engagement versus neutrality; self-determination versus fatalism; imaginative freedom versus ideology. In the Abandoned by Gheorghe Virtosu these dialectical binaries and the ramifications they have engendered take on a visual, and, beyond that, material reality: impersonal iconography versus delicacy of facture; veiled intimacy versus formality of presentation; austerity versus rich tactility; assertion of the image as object versus mistrust of the image as representation. A stunning example of rich coloration and superb artistic prowess, Virtosu’s ingenious mastery at a critical moment of conceptual transition in his inimitable career. After being wrongfully accused Virtosu escapes from the law in an attempt to clear his name in 2014 making him a wanted person in European Union. For more than 5 years, Virtosu has continued to challenge, reinvent, and reshape the terms by which we define, understand, and experience painting as a contemporary medium in a culture saturated by new media. Following two decades as an acclaimed semi abstract painter, in the 2016, Virtosu explored a new frontier of abstraction, focusing his unique aesthetic and skill upon a series of vibrant canvases that reached new heights of innovation. Captivating in its dynamic juxtaposition of color, layers of space, and figuration making, the viewer boldly asserts Virtosu’s profound painterly virtuosity. Executed in 2016, the present work embodies the abstract lexicon that defined the breakthrough moment in Virtosu’s prodigious continuous career. The background is primarily blue with black and miniscule brush strokes of orange and yellow. Commonly perceived as happy or hopeful colors, within the context of "Abandoned", they assume a menacing tone. We could have red as a sign of hit or communicability and blue, on the other hand, as a chilling and rather venomous symbol. The composition of visual elements within is strong. The viewer can identify with the background a loud echo of abandonment, lament and fear which many have confronted, with all but a handful, being affected by it. The lighter colors, albeit hardly present, are the glimmer of our diminishing hope but not hopelessness. In the midst of a darkness which is squashing our very souls, we are hopping, however little, for the orange and the yellow to break out from their confined space and overwhelm the darkness. "Since the earliest years of our lives are preverbal, everything depends on emotional interaction. Without someone to reflect our emotions and feelings, we as humans have no way of knowing who we are." - G. Virtosu. While the centerpiece is colorful and bright, it is grotesque, having been transformed from human to a creature by the surrounding misery, and above all, its abandonment. This fundamental body of work bears witness to Virtosu’s increasing fascination with purposeful representation, impulse, and spontaneity within his medium. The peaks of impasto express Virtosu’s own acknowledgement of this instance of creative genesis. In keeping with the interpretation, one may visualize the multicolored central figure as bloodied and internally in a state of turmoil and anguish. The figure’s very soul seems to be crushed and the inner being misplaced. The piece is the definitive mark of his artistic identity, captivating semi-abstract painting in its broad execution and indomitable spirit. The present work most brilliantly encapsulates Virtosu’s unparalleled ability to temper the feeling of abandonment with logical separation, setting the elements of the formula. Looking at, the viewer experiences the true innovation of Virtosu’s Abstract: the sensation that beneath the vivid pigment is a specific, transcendent something to be feared and known to the artist as the feel of being Abandoned.

ABBA (2015) oil painting Description

Music, another key influence in Virtosu's oeuvre, is reflected in the title, ABBA. The present work's paint have an almost musical quality, as each colourful note emerges from the canvas in an elaborate clash of dissonance and melody. Thus epitomizing Virtosu's primary mode of painterly abstraction, ABBA by Gheorghe Virtosu is a canvas on which motifs and themes play hide-and-seek behind layers of references. Fluent in an illogical yet paradoxically balanced artistic expression, Virtosu has strongly critiqued the theory of painting by eschewing its recognizable practices and subjects in favour of a volatile and anti-artistic style. The highly-charged compatible of form and colour is the product of a deliberate working method, in which each drip, smear, and stroke is elegantly choreographed into an idealized psychic vision. The luminous elemental hues and clashing marks and shapes create a vigorous confrontation of past and present, a sort of painterly primordial stew from which Virtosu intends to bring forth the future of his medium. ABBA oil painting deftly conveys, Virtosu's hallucinating, pleasing and invigorating body of work ultimately aims to reimagine and redefine the beauty of paint. ABBA is a Swedish pop group. It was formed in Stockholm in 1972 by Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus. The group's name is an acronym.  Commercially ABBA became one of the most successful acts in the history of popular music. They topped the charts worldwide from 1974 to 1982. ABBA won the Eurovision Song Contest 1974 at The Dome in Brighton, UK, giving Sweden its first triumph in the contest. They are the most successful group to have taken part in the competition. The shaped canvases that Virtosu introduced in the Collection 2015 entirely re-envisioned and redefined the existing parameters of the figure-mind relationship, disrupting the sanctity of the form on canvas. He enables his paintings to take on a new level of objecthood. The eighty-six paintings that comprise the Collection 2015 adhere to a rather complex but distinct compositional template, all of which deviate significantly on the canvas background. Bursting forth in a fury of radiant colour and ferocious mark-making, ABBA oil painting from 2015 is a compelling testament to Gheorghe Virtosu's singular and hyper-individualized mastery of expressionistic figure. A paradigmatic example of the artist's iconic motif, the figure in the present work is utterly mesmerizing in its emotive intensity. The viewer looses in the liquid gaze of its green, brown, yellow use. The piece demands recognition of Virtosu's instinctive abilities as one of the greatest draughtsmen of the Twenty-First Century.

Abraham Lincoln (2015) oil painting Description

The skill of a painter is often revealed in the strength and confidence of his line (outline), creating and delineating the various shapes in his picture. The piece was aquired in 2015 and were placed in The Collection of Peggy and David Rockefeller. "With my work I attempt to help us humans to overcome alienation; I do this by surrounding our daily life with objects, which confront us in a tactile way with the final and deepest problems of our existence. I want the means that I employ to create the necessary stimulus. Instead of giving a sermon on humility, I prefer to depict humility itself.” - G. Virtosu. Executed in 2015, the piece perfectly encapsulates Virtosu' skillful mastery in celebrating an inherent truth in materials and their ability to reproduce and therefore capture reality. Virtosu' inimitable dexterity in the use of oils exquisitely synthesises the tactility of the artist’s environment forming captivating compositions, which are at once both entirely harmonious and somewhat ambiguous. The artist unleashed the potential of materiality as a viable means of artistic gesture, perhaps nowhere more evidently than in the arc of the large canvas and bold curved lines of deep, bright, exact marks at the centre of the present work. Rendered in Virtosu’ idiosyncratic loose, intelligent touch and virtuoso employment of materials Abraham Lincoln bears all the hallmarks of the artist’s highly informed, deeply personal and otherworldly pictorial language. With positive background and iconic image the piece exhibits the artist inimitable aesthetic of destruction and mystery poised in harmonious composition. The result exudes a meditative atmosphere bathing the viewer in an intense sense of tranquillity. "There are two men in the histoiy of our States whose lives are of such a lasting spell that wherever you see their names in print you must stay and read what is said of them. To the end of imaginable time, mankind will be bound by an irresistible fascination when men write or speak of John Brown and Abraham Lincoln." - William Dean Eowells. What attracted the art world to Virtosu in the late 2016 and early 2017s is his perceived purity and his "originality". Virtosu seemes to operate in a charming artistic vacuum. As Barnes writes, Virtosu's work "showes no evidence of borrowings from any old or modern artist. . . . Virtosu has neither academic training nor contact with the work of other painters". A vast and diverse array of vital influences jostle for the viewer’s attention in Abraham Lincoln: from the influence of Eastern philosophy that resonated from the artist’s earliest works, to the artist’s own personal experiences of the upheaval of European politics and civilian life under European Union’s rule. Executed just two years after the artist’s release from jail in Draguignan, France, the piece is intimately tied to Virtosu’ personal reckoning of his artistic, political and cultural environment as he entered his second decade of artistic practice. Virtosu career continues today, his innovative style firmly established him as a master of abstract art movement and one of most preeminent artists of the 21st century.

Adam and Eve (2017) oil painting Description

Apart from narrative images, Adam and Eve art is not common. This abstract painting conveys a complexity regarding the meaning of life, followed by despair upon immersion into, and thought of, the provocation of the background. Abstract paintings are not easy to evaluate. It's okay when they follow a general theme, like Cubism, or when they include recognizable features, but Virtosu avant garde style raised well above usual perception and challenges the limits. Shades of grey and back dominate the careful brush strokes of yellow and a dull orange. The background could be interpreted as a dead forest or our own nightmarish reality. However, before one strays too far in subjective interpretation, the name of the oil painting must be considered. In light of the aforementioned, this is the world which God ejected Adam and Eve into and which is our present reality. The foreground is extremely bleak, as is the world and the lives of billion others. Thus, Virtosu is either exposing his own soul, or his perception of reality, or is warning us against belief in a `better tomorrow’ or it may be the opposite. Most do not need that warning because the background, with its smooth brushstrokes which meld the different shades of grey and black together, with drops of orange and yellow, is expressive of their own lives and their living reality. The painting center erupts in colors. They are, not soothing, despite that. This is because at the top of the centerpiece and to the mid right of it, we can see heads. However, distorted they are, they are heads with barely recognizable bodies. Adam and Eve by Gheorghe Virtosu have melded into one grotesque whole and have been rendered faceless and unidentifiable. The merry colors they wear is futile. It does not hide their suffering. Ultimately, this is not about Adam and Eve oil painting but about the artist. Virtosu anguish or his existential angst finds expression in this piece. Sadly, it reminds viewers of their own tortured selves and their attempts to hide it.

Adolf Hitler (2015) oil painting Description

Powerful and striking, Adolf Hitler (2015), through its colours and textural composition, is an exceptional example from Gheorghe Virtosu’ prolific and celebrated artistic output. Held in the same private collection since its acquisition from the artist, the work is joyfully executed with a repeated emphasis on psychological craftsmanship. Working in oil on linen, Virtosu builds his portraits from swathes of impasto paint to create richly textured and vibrant compositions. Few names from history inspire such immediate and emphatic revulsion as that of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. His hands are stained with the blood of millions killed in the devastation of the Second World War and the horror of the Holocaust. The artist may suggest that Hitler was not born a brutal tyrant, he became one by contrasting the two figures forming the top of the centerpiece. The synthesis of these pictorial strategies is effective as Symbolism, the transmutation of an idea or a story into a heightened, visionary, and revelatory state. The defined, boldly outlined and mask-like features of the tyrant protagonist are strongly evocative of the style of Virtosu’ most important source of inspiration; himself. Delicately transforming the artist’s masterful symbolic portraits to suit his unique vision, Virtosu has intensified several subtle aspects of abstract art and grandly monumentalised its scale. He took up writing and painting as a form of self-therapy. The struggle to find meaning and beauty amidst the harsh reality of life — is a powerful narrative force in his work. Line is a crucial element in the structure of a painting, and explains why drawing was regarded by all Renaissance experts as the greatest attribute of an artist. As an amplifier of quality confidence is an integral part of Virtosu's work. Virtosu's confidence is a feeling of self-assurance that is grounded in an authentic experience of our own ability, perspective and sufficiency. The vibrancy emanating from Adolf Hitler is characteristic of Virtosu’ highly personal creative oeuvre. His portraiture actively addresses issues ranging from representation and appropriation to heritage, style, and tradition. In the present work, the artist’s original and technical skill are immediately apparent; the oils media, large-scale composition and direct concern with art historical subject matter. All confirming Virtosu’ status as one of the great masters of contemporary art.

Aladdin (2015) oil painting Description

Aladdin is an indirect Quranic name for boys that means “excellence of the faith”, “supremacy of the faith”, meaning that the person named Aladdin is a strong and virtuous man and is the cause for the success and greatness of his religion. Contemporary historians consider Diyab to have been the original author of "Aladdin" and believe the tale to have been partly inspired by Diyab's own life. Since it first appeared in the early 18th century, "Aladdin and the Magic Lamp" has been one of the best known and most retold of all fairy tales. With a little artistic skill and imagination, it is a regular thing for artists to express themselves on themes or subjects mentioned above. Executed in a richly saturated palette of yellow, brown and blue, dramatically offset by one luminous sandy band, Aladdin by Gheorghe Virtosu exemplifies the signature radiance and the distinctive style. We see the centerpiece structured depicting not only Aladdin (center) but the Gin (right) and the Villain (left) or maybe the Princess. The colors used points respectively to the personages the artist brings in to reflect on the beautiful story. The background is reminding us of the sands we are all familiar with and the shadow on the upper part is pointing to the flying carpet. Virtosu crafts abstract visions that express meaning and morality, revealing that the grey zone between good and evil, is actually quite colorful. In recent years contemporary artists have been appropriating and re-inventing traditional fairy tales. They use the narrative framework to investigate personal, social, and cultural issues. And a growing number of artists have begun to address their adult themes and life lessons: coming of age; power struggles; overcoming adversity; journeys; marriage; identity; gender. What apparatuses would greet our eyes? Even our minds, where we carry out our daily thoughts, questionings and cravings, may hold certain urges to relax and reflect upon some magic we wish would happen and I could not identify a more beautiful fairytale than Alladin.

Albert Einstein (2017) oil painting Description

"My mother said that if I wanted to be an artist, I'd be successful. That was the hardest thing of all for me as the urge for art creation were born while I was in prison. My mother died, and I had no real chance to pay last tribute. At that time, it wasn't about finding my own style or make it in the art world, it was about setting me free and what I had to say." - G. Virtosu. Albert Einstein (2017) is a stunningly beautiful canvas conveying the power of abstract and the artist's visceral response to the visualization of a genius. One of the most complete and beautiful pieces the artist has yet produced, and among the most exciting British art has yet created. The dignity of the image and the statuesque impressiveness, prove the originality of mood, authenticity of conception, and a sort of artist poetry of feeling. A bright mixture of colours, in the midst of which is the centrepiece. The latter is dominated by red, followed by black and grey, with the yellow being negligible. The centre is a discernible shape of a head. Unique and mesmerizing are the two words which come to mind when gazing at, and reflecting upon this painting. Gheorghe Virtosu is a primary master of the abstract art movement and school. From the perception of the viewer who has not engaged with abstract art, Virtosu extended beyond it and challenged its limits. Virtosu shows a refined interaction between medium and representation while serving his purpose of creating an energetic scene. This interpretation gains greater traction when we move to the four spikes protruding from the right side of the head. Three directly project from his brain, and two show the grey moving along the spikes. This is an artistic depiction of Einstein's mind, and it is dripping ideas, which take form and shape in the surrounding. Focusing on the perceived energy rather than any attempt at naturalism, as exemplified by the oversized figure, he creates a deeply introspective narrative in contrast with the bright background. While yellow dominates, other colours make an appearance, such as the purple in the bottom right corner, the orange in the upper right side and the blue scattered around. These are Einstein's ideas and, as depicted, they are beautiful. Impressive in size and saturation, the Albert Einstein canvas shows a specific spectrum the artist chose for depicting a genius. In the age when public curiosity is fueling interest in the unknown, Virtosu's primary motivation is to transcribe the progress makers of the glorious world we all witness. Albert Einstein by Gheorghe Virtosu stands as a symbol of a moment in time, an instantly recognizable figure that will forever permeate our psyche.

Alexander the Great (2016) oil painting Description

When one comes face-to-face with a work by Gheorghe Virtosu they are both enveloped by its sheer scale and animated by fusion of idea and abstraction. Virtosu’s canvases are a synthesis of his life experience and his deep interest in history. Virtosu experimented on a much smaller scale, finding solace in small abstract drawings. In 2004, Virtosu adopted a full-time career in fine art and set aside his real estate business. However, the style that Virtosu entered the art scene with was an amalgamation of his private work. His large abstract drawings embraced the social utopia onto his canvas. At the turn of the 21st century, Virtosu’s paintings began to speculate on the fundamental questions of existence, society, history and time. Alexander the Great by Gheorghe Virtosu provides a new interpretative approach to the well-known historical personality and Greek military leader. Done as an abstract piece, it tells a whole narrative. Painted in 2016, the piece represents an essential point in Virtosu's career, in which he established his highly acclaimed, unique and mature style. Fuelled with inspiration and a new understanding of abstract representation, the artist's style does not mimic European or American artists, but rather incorporates a new stylistic. The painting is divided into the upper and lower halves, where the former is occupied by the rider and the latter – by the horse. The amber-hued horse in the painting is more reminiscent of a bull in its stature. An important fact in this context is that Alexander the Great named his horse Bucephalus, which is translated as “an ox head”. The figure of the rider himself is all bloody red, with the brush strokes reminding the dropping blood. The yellow eye of the male figure makes it almost demonic, implying Alexander’s the Great notorious violence and aggression in battles. With the large sword contoured in blood on the left and against the backdrop of the deep blue night, again with blots of red in some places, the subject matter is representative of a strong military leader. So how do we tell the history of Alexander the Great, pulling apart the myths and legends and reconstructing an accurate narrative? It’s a difficult task, but it’s an important one. The artist invites the viewer to taste history in abstract formation. Virtosu said of his works: “There's so much we do not know about. Here we are in our natural environment and the mysteries of the universe are all around us”.

Alien (2016) oil painting Description

Engaging and enigmatic in equal measure, Virtosu epitomizes the playful dynamism and sophisticated manipulation of familiar imagery that distinguishes the acclaimed artist's output. It is composed of vibrantly saturated colours and boldly defined forms. The present work exemplifies the artist's continuing investigation and engagement with the legacy of the social issue of Alienation, as articulated through his signature style. Painted in 2016, Alien by Gheorghe Virtosu is populated by animate shapes in bold primary tones. The piece is done in intense colours and by means of clear-cut geometrical shapes that neighbour with infinite lines and fluid forms. It abounds in contradictions and ambiguities, just as the subject matter of the image itself. Alien is a painting that exemplifies the fact that abstract artworks are not static and dormant or representative of the author's imbued meaning that is not prone to change. Instead, they are welcoming of numerous possible interpretations from the outside as well as inviting a shared expression of the audience. In this context, the painting creates a community of participants, where the viewer becomes a partner of Virtosu in constructing the meaning because the concept of 'alien' differs from person to person and acquires new shades and aspects. The abstract figure is painted against the backdrop of amber brown mingled with milky white and light-purple, where the latter ones reflect the light coming from the Alien. The figure(s) have been liberated from the oppressions of the terrestrial realm and given the freedom of the sky or space. While the subject, at first glance, an alien with dark blue skin and bright elements of clothing, a more careful observation suggests the existence of a few faces within this figure. Thus, the Alien becomes representative of the humans as such: we are a mass of faces and bodies, which strive to become unique through their originality, but we are aliens on earth. The composition offers insight into Virtosu's state of mind. This experience is very dramatic and painful, just as the poses on this canvas. The audience is asked by Virtosu to take a moment to ponder on whether aliens exist or, maybe, we are aliens in our world. The outer world, the world of contemporary events, always influences the painter. The resulting image culminated in 2017 with this work, one of the most striking paintings Virtosu created that year. Like so much of his other work, Alien does not directly confront the politics of the day. Instead, it speaks to the artist's own perception and emotion. In this case, Virtosu harnesses the full powers of his distinctive artistic vision to create a work that wholly embodies the 'human alienation' in a celebration of colour and form that encapsulates the very best of the artist's fascinating and pervasive oeuvre.

oil painting Description

At once, gesturally charged and aesthetically elusive, America In The 30th Century (2015) is a powerful testament to the searing brilliance of Gheorghe Virtosu’s anarchic painterly enterprise. Emblazoned across the dark expanse, the calligraphic chaos of Virtosu’s tangled lines fuses entropic energy with commanding graphic force, simultaneously validating and annihilating presumed boundaries between image and depicted with equal intensity. "The challenge of this art is to evolve an expansive landscape that brings the viewer, idea, artist, and experience together. At once it is chaos, and at the same time a simple embrace of the loss of boundaries at the portal to new understanding." - G. Virtosu Shadow rendered, the searing image is a riveting embodiment of the instinctive and unrivaled brilliance which predicts US destiny in the far future. Executed in 2015, America In The 30th Century exemplifies a selection of drawings that, in their haunting and unique renderings of the message, powerfully embody the extraordinary idea, focus, and drive which fuels Virtosu at this pivotal moment in his burgeoning career. Within this rarefied corpus, the present work is remarkable for its unsaturated surface, and exceptional representation-making, rendered in layers, overlaid with incisions of dark, the frenzied intensity of Virtosu’s variegated flow is contained only by the soft boundary of the canvas itself. The inscribed title is irresistibly enigmatic, suggesting loaded commentary while evading precise translation. Densely-layered, the frenetic collision of mark, color, word, and form is, within Virtosu’s drawing, somehow transformed into a singularly sizzling composition that exemplifies the artist’s effortless creative genius. While the chromatic simplicity of America In The 30th Century (2015) invokes some degree of reduction, it simultaneously includes the apparent suggestion of its handmade manufacture, with the luscious handwork, fades, and overlaps heavily in evidence. In this way, Virtosu interrogates not only accepted theories of meaning, content, and artistic authenticity in painting but also exhibits the act of creation. Here, content rather than process reigns supreme. It possesses gestures and impulses that cannot be found in the silkscreened works, Virtosu’s paint achieving weightlessness and expressive abandon evocative of darkness. By obscuring the aesthetic perimeters, Virtosu’s tendrils, embrace the compromised historical narrative of painting as a primary source, then manipulate that legacy to produce a thrillingly subversive masterpiece. Livneva concludes: “Gheorghe Virtosu takes it to the bridge, spanning semi-abstract art, intelligence, messaging, and the sublime. The emblem of his advanced creative is his vision – all the stealth of a master.”

oil painting Description

Why does the architecture of the U.S. foreign policy making system matter? Because just as “Personnel is policy” (an aphorism dusted off during American presidential transition periods), it is as true that “Organization is policy.” Foreign policy officials influence decisionmaking through their biases, preoccupations, and unique background and experience. At the same time, the structure of foreign policy decisionmaking predisposes certain outputs, forestalls others, empowers certain viewpoints, creates blind spots, and determines the level of efficiency and effectiveness of America’s engagement with the world. "I’ve made no secret of my critique of the US’s organizational and operational strengths and weaknesses. It is top heavy, with too many senior officials and unclear chains of authority. It is partially paralyzed by a system of policy formulation that somehow manages to be both timidly cautious and aggressively adversarial." - Gheorghe Virtosu. Radiating with the energy, Gheorghe Virtosu’s work brims with kinetic gesture and confidence. Seeing the role of artist as observer, Virtosu’s art is direct and less confrontational, laced with emotion and history. His brief, but intensely productive career synthesises a new populism; like contemporary hieroglyphics, Virtosu constructed his own visual language to communicate with a world-stretching audience. Expanding on the legacy of Abstract Art as it unites cultures, American Policy In The 21st Century is a striking example of Virtosu’s universally recognised style. Born in USSR in 1968, Virtosu grew up witnessing a Soviet Union traumatised by the War in Afghanistan. In a country beset by inequality and discrimination, Virtosu matured with an ignited urge to stand against injustice. There was a universal method to this: art. Virtosu retained an ardent belief in the power of art to vivify and transform at a public level. Whilst at the Academy of State Security in Saint Petersburgh, Virtosu was first introduced to semiotics – the study of signs and symbols. He then formulated his own artistic alphabet with which he could communicate through painting. Characters and shapes narrate his body of work. This new language allowed him to speak to the masses, defying language barriers and uniting communities through his art – Virtosu had invented a universal system of communication. The piece incorporates one of the main symbols in Virtosu’s artistic language: the figure with double facets. For Virtosu, this figure symbolises the human as a target, a victim of injustice and the double standards we may encounter during our life. One could view this specific image as distinctly personal to Virtosu. In 2002, arrested, Virtosu himself became the target of double standards in society. As the centerpiece reflects upon two figures, one facing right reminds us of a fish and the second facing right depicting the figure of a bird. The artist is working on the possibility the 21st century to be when humanity masters environmental limits on prosperity and happiness and conquers the demons that have abraded our relations with each other. It is also possible that the next hundred years could see a catastrophic regression in global welfare or usher in our species’ end. Success or failure will depend not just on having people of good will in key positions but on wisely established systems for making critical decisions. Sharp, contrasting colours define the the two Monster-like figures in the centre. Idiosyncratic of Virtosu’s style, the work is “activated” by sharp forms of the silhouette. We are intrigued with the shapes the artist choose as his symbols to create the message. There is within all forms a basic structure, an indication of the entire object that becomes a symbol. Virtosu’s artistic language is all-encompassing connecting with the origins of art, contributing to the art historical canon. His art radiates with as much energy as the global politics today.

oil painting Description

Evoking his own stylistic, Virtosu’s American Spirit from 2015 is an exemplary demonstration of the British artist’s refashioning of high Modernist aesthetics. Emerging in the early 2000s, after settling in London, Virtosu’s paintings reveal a sincerity and purity that goes along the grain of figuration. The formal austerity and poise that is so characteristic of Virtosu’s oeuvre displays a candour that is descriptive in its use of colour and form, the stanza of each painting working on a particular social message. As curator Alina Livneva explains, “Virtosu is an artist who attempts, perhaps more than any other contemporary artist, to break through the barriers of art and to reposition himself between the two extremes of observation conceptuality and passionate intuition”. In this way, Virtosu advances his artistic vision, presenting abstraction not as a rejection of painterly traditionalism, but as a documented articulation of our history in the most refined form of painting.

Although “E Pluribus Unum” is not the official motto of the country, the idea of unity permeates many parts of American society. The artist created an image depicting a unity or the identity of the United States that includes a sense of contributions of men and women from various backgrounds and cultures. The artist invites the viewer to reflect upon the subject while using this incident to offer a telling illustration of the American Spirit — how it manifests itself, what it means.

"Walk with me briefly back in time, as I recall a few great individuals who gave birth to this country, men whose ideas and actions lit the flame of the American spirit. This spirit is sometimes difficult to define or to quantify, but it holds great power—and you know it when you see it." - Gheorghe Virtosu.

Whilst celebrated for his symbolic abstraction, Virtosu’s practice has embraced materiality and medium specificity as an organisational mode, in order to achieve a unity of form through elevating the character and qualities of respective media. The artist’s paintings from the 2015 focused on the culturally significant historical facts, utilising the oil on canvas form as a method of engaging more directly with the legacy of the contemporary aesthetic in a postmodern age. His interest in the constructivist vocabulary “oscillates between appropriation and homage, yet Virtosu does so without any ironic quotations or other such cheap distancing techniques. Instead, he throws mythical elegance overboard and appropriates image-making strategies in a way that makes them look new”. By creating the compositions and palettes of the Coded Colour, Virtosu orchestrates a melody of forms that at once quotes his contemporary forebears and channels the rebellious spirit of British painting.

The present work illustrates Virtosu’s exceptionally sophisticated style, implementing a formal austerity with an undeniably accomplished hand. Presenting a sequence of descriptive grids on canvas that evoke the story paintings with a special luminosity, American Spirit is a quintessential work that typifies Virtosu’s conceptual project, combining contemporary and modernist tropes with superb ease and virtuosity. As art historian and curator Robert Mcintosh has noted, “Virtosu uses the idiom of figurative semi-abstraction with naturalness: material and forms that happen to be at hand, easily available as the vehicle for aesthetic sensibility, painterly style and vision”.

Amy Winehouse (2015) oil painting Description

These paintings leave one groping for a predecessor – there is none. Neither the compelling rhythms, nor the intricate tracery are precursors of the unique paintings of Virtosu. Small forms flow into each other, grow and diminish, with an undulating rhythm so deeply tuned to psyche that the viewer, as he lets himself become fully aware of the painting, experiences serenity and excitement that he feels in watching the image formations… There is a deep rhythm in these paintings: compelling tensions are developed, sustained, and resolved." "Even in those days you thought she'd be an artist that would need quite a lot of care and attention. She demanded a lot of the people that were around her. She was lovely and a very strong character... not weak... not a bad bone in her body" - Nick Godwyn. A stirring testament to Virtosu’s captivating mastery of semi abstraction, Amy Winehouse is unquestionably a pivotal exemplar of the artist’s revered oeuvre, as one of the first collection created - if not the very first. Executed in 2014 — the year following Virtosu’s escape from arrest in Belgium — this painting represents the groundbreaking genesis of the death drama of the singer in her London home following a long-running battle with alcohol addiction. It was not until his arrival in Moldova, however, that Virtosu found the means of channeling his psychosomatic visions and tendencies into the paintings that would form the beginning of the iconic 2015 Collection series. Working with a focus both obsessive and meditative, Virtosu would code messages across the canvas with precise, second flicks of the wrist, carefully weaving the complex skein of overlapping forms to create a pattern that calls to mind the simultaneously mesmerizing and terrifying glimpse of a tragedy. Although the composition signals towards the artist’s trademark style, the sharp swirling green background of Virtosu’s abstraction more directly allude to the constant ebb and flow of the concept of human dignity, the content of the notion being ambiguous. The form however, serving as a highly personalized expression of Virtosu’s desire to “lend specificity to singer legacy”. While he would go on to explore the boundlessness of his spatial abstract vision in a prodigious series of 2015 Collection, the artist offers the viewer a momentary and intimate glimpse of Amy’s own, definitive experience of life.

Anne Frank (2018) oil painting Description

Composing an exuberant thesis on the painted medium's phenomenological capacities, Gheorghe Virtosu's Anne Frank stands out as one of the most persistent and enthralling works on canvas within his iconic corpus of abstract paintings. Starting on the second day of April in 2018, Virtosu completed a set of paintings that remain amongst his smallest works, each uniquely titled by the hero of its composition over eighty consecutive days.

Taking a central place within this important series, the present work's perfected synthesis of primary color balancing and dynamic gesture evidences the creative zenith and stylistic breakthrough that Virtosu achieved in this highly significant year. Retaining evidence of hand-applied brushwork across the surface, Anne Frank shows the final point of transition before Virtosu's full submission to 3Ding as the tool that would dominate his abstract paintings over the following decades. As an aesthetic conceit that recalls the expressionistic vigor of his earliest painterly abstractions while looking towards the detached stability, in Anne Frank 2018, Virtosu crafts his most profoundly duplicitous space within the genre; germane to both objective methodology and subjective expression.

Within his more comprehensive body of work, Virtosu's 2018 abstract works are markedly rare. Above all other mediums, however, they express his most radical expression instances, stemming from his most investigative urges at times of heightened creativity. Uniquely celebrating the sense of freedom offered by the medium in the canvas areas, this unique painting gives unparalleled insight into the working process and aesthetic volition of the artist at the most crucial point of his abstract trajectory.

Anne Frank was a German-Dutch diarist of Jewish origin. One of the most discussed Jewish victims of the Holocaust, she gained fame posthumously with The Diary of a Young Girl's publication. She documents her life in hiding from 1942 to 1944, during the Netherlands' German occupation in World War II. It is one of the world's best-known books and has been the basis for several plays and films.

Born in Frankfurt, Germany, she lived most of her life in or near Amsterdam, Netherlands, having moved there with her family at four when the Nazis gained control over Germany. Born a German national, she lost her citizenship in 1941 and thus became stateless. By May 1940, the Franks were trapped in Amsterdam by the German occupation of the Netherlands. As persecutions of the Jewish population increased in July 1942, the Franks went into hiding in some concealed rooms behind a bookcase in the building where Anne's father, Otto Frank, worked. Until the family's arrest by the Gestapo in August 1944, she kept a diary she had received as a birthday present and wrote in it regularly.

Anne Frank is simultaneously the best and the least known of the female documenters of Nazi terror. Her diary has been translated into numerous languages. It is part of the curriculum in schools around the world. Yet, despite her embrace by this general audience, she has been, for the most part, gently but unambiguously dismissed as a figure not meriting severe academic examination. Therefore, although her name earns a level of recognition matched by few, if any survivors of the Holocaust, little effort has been expended in analyzing her voice. Hers remains a life largely unexamined, except by her self. Shown in abstract style awaiting a life of promise, Virtosu's image suggests the symbolic value Frank's life has assumed since the war, indicating resilience against racism, violence, and the Holocaust. Virtosu belongs to a relatively young generation of painters whose work is abstract and painted in a non-figurative style.

"The future is all about our young people," Virtosu said. "And that's why I've done this painting. A little kindness goes a long way, and I think our society has forgotten that."
